Americas faces off with San Antonio O'Connor in a Class 6A state softball semifinal on Friday, June 3, 2022 at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.

Updates will appear below when the game begins

5:07 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, final. Americas' greatest season ends with a state-semifinal loss that drops their record to 33-7. Alvidrez reached base as the tying run with one out but Americas couldn't muster anything else. A fantastic season, they are accepting a trophy now.

5:07 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, end 6th. Three up, three down. Americas looks for some magic in the 7th.

5:01 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, middle 6th. Americas loses a run on a close play at the plate. Hernandez beats out a very close play at first that O'Connor argued. She took second on a stolen base that O'Connor argued was a foul tip. Took third on a wild pitch, then thrown out on a bang-bang play at the plate trying to advance on a pitch that got away from the catcher. Americas argued that one. Three close plays that inning.

4:52 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, end 5th. Americas works around a hit batter to get out of the inning quietly. Fun fact: Like all 12 schools in the Northside School District, Sandra Day O'Connor High School is named after a Supreme Court justice.

4:46 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, middle 5th. Three up, three down on fly balls. Americas down to six outs.

4:41 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 7, Americas 5, end 4th. O'Connor takes the lead with three two-out runs. After a lead-opp double, Americas was an out away from escaping the inning when Goode tied it with an RBI double and Munoz followed with a home run. Trailblazers have work to do.

4:28 p.m. MDT: Americas 5, O'Connor 4, middle 4th. Americas plugs back in front. Perez leads off with a double, Hernandez singled and Ruiz loaded the bases with no out when she was hit. With one out, Garcia drew an RBI walk, followed by a sacrifice fly from Alividrez, who didn't miss by much of having a big hit. Two runs on two hits.

4:15 p.m. MDT: O'Connor 4, Americas 3, end 3rd. Ugly, strange inning for Americas. Goode led off with what appeared to be a routine single and tried to leg it out to second. It was a close play but she might have been out. The umpires id not make any call whatsoever. As Americas asked for a call, Goode alertly ran to third. Smart, aggressive base running but a strange non-call at second. Goode scored on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs a throwing error by Americas extended the inning, then a double by the pitcher Portillo off the 200-foot sign in left drove home the go-ahead run.

4:04 p.m. MDT: Americas 3, O'Connor 2, middle 3rd. Perfect inning for O'Connor pitcher Portillo. Two strikeouts to end the inning.

3:57 p.m. MDT: Americas 3, O'Connor 2, end 2nd. O'Connor gets back in it with two unearned runs. After a pair of one-out singles and some aggressive baserunning, Americas narrowly misses getting an out at third but then throws the ball alway in the aftermath, allowing both runners to score. Inning actually could have been worse, as Perez hit the leadoff hitter on an 0-2 count but catcher Hernandez caught the runner trying to steal for the first out.

3:43 p.m. MDT: Americas 3, O'Connor 0, middle second. Ruiz leads off with a bloop single but next three retired.

3:34 p.m. MDT: Americas 3, O'Connor 0, end 1st. Perfect first for Perez with a strikeout.

3:27 p.m. MDT: Americas 3, O'Connor 0, middle 1st. Three runs on three hits with a walk. First three Trailblazers scored. Mia Perez stakes to a three-run lead.

3:20 p.m. MDT Americas 3, O'Connor 0, top 1st: Sepulveda an RBI single, steals second, with one out Carrillo doubles off the third-base bag to drive in two runs. One out, Carrillo on second, three runs in.

3:20 p.m. MDT: The start Americas wanted. Garcia singles, steals second, Alvidrez walks and both advance on a wild pitch. Second and third, no outs.

3:15 p.m. MDT: We are underway. Both teams, by the way, are batting their designated player ninth for an outfielder.

3:08 p.m. MDT: They are announcing starting lineups.  O'Connor seems to have a slight advantage in number of fans, but not as big as you'd think considering it's a 100-minute drive for O'Conner and a 100-minute flight for Americas. Americas is the designated visiting team and will bat first.

2:56 p.m. MDT: For O'Connor, Goode ss, Munoz 2b, Gonzalez 1b, Dominquez c, Portillo p, Sanchez rf, Salinas rf, Carder 3b, Lunsford dp, Rodriguez cf

2:53 p.m. MDT: Lineups are in. For Americas, Garcia 2b, Alvidrez lf, Sepulveda ss, Saenz cf, Carrillo 3b, Perez p, Hernandez c, Luiz 1b, Aguilar dp, Zubia rf

2:48 p.m. MDT: They just opened the gates. Stadium is dead empty but won't be for much longer.

2:40 p.m. MDT: There was showers earlier in the day, but there are few clouds in sight now. It's 90 degrees with a breeze blowing in from center field. Game should end before sunset but clouds are supposed to move in in the next hour or so. No more rain forecast.

2:32 p.m. Mountain time: The Class 6A state semifinal between Americas and San Antonio Northside O'Connor is now slated to start at 3:15 p.m. Mountain time (4:15 p.m. in Austin). The previous game, a Class 5A semifinal between Georgetown and Aledo, went to eight innings (Georgetown won).

Both teams are on the field warming up. We're still 15 minutes away from having lineups.

The scene out here is a wild one, as Texas is hosting Air Force in a baseball regional about 50 yards from here.
