Lakeland football stuns Caldwell, ending state's longest winning streak on day of upsets

New Jersey's longest high school football winning streak came to a shocking end on Friday night.

No. 5 seed Lakeland scored a touchdown with 41 seconds left to beat No. 1 Caldwell − which had won 37 straight games dating back to November 2020 − and held on to win 33-28 in the North 2, Group 2 sectional semifinals.

Junior quarterback Colin Sabric found junior Aidan Thacker on a 23-yard pass for the winning score. An ensuing two-point conversion failed.

The Lancers never held a lead until that final score. The game was tied multiple times, and the Chiefs led 28-27 late in the fourth quarter after Lakeland had scored a touchdown but missed the extra point.

Lakeland advances to face No. 2 seed Bernards in next week's North 2, Group 2 sectional title game.

Three other state-ranked teams go down

Caldwell entered its game against Lakeland ranked No. 4 in the latest Statewide Public Top 20 rankings.
