Lady Packers seek berth in state cross country meet

Oct. 23—MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls cross country team has just one full-time runner, but the Lady Packers have two trophy-winning performances to their credit as they prepare for the Region 1-7A meet.

The region meet will be held on Tuesday at Freedom Park in Valdosta. The junior varsity race will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the varsity girls race at 11:15 a.m. and the varsity boys race at 11:45.

The Lady Packers have won trophies at the Cook Invitational and at the Red Devil Invitational in Hawkinsville.

"This is a group that has done amazing this season, especially considering only one is a full-time runner," said coach Mell Wier.

Two members of the team are also in the color guard; two play on Colquitt County's first flag football team; and two more play on the volleyball team.

"Getting them all there at the same time hasn't been easy, but when we do, the results are positive," Wier said.

The girls team that will compete in the region meet includes seniors Yarely Zongua, Daniella Malagon and Vanessa Torres; junior Melissa Breedlove; sophomores Jaelyn Wier and Eidi Gachuez; and freshman Jaidi Gachuez.

The Colquitt County boys team lost several strong runners from the 2022 team and Wier characterizes this as a rebuilding season.

"This team group has really grown throughout the season and we are putting it all together at the right time," Wier said.

The Packers are led by seniors James Fagan, Marco Lorenzo and Isaac Rodriguez.

Also running will be sophomores Amichah Carroll, Joshua Ramirez, Nathan Parales and Christian Nunez.

The state cross country meet will be held Nov. 3-4 in Carrollton.
