Jon Bloom replaces retired Al McCoy as full-time radio announcer for Suns games

The Phoenix Suns' play-by-play radio announcer torch has been officially passed from Al McCoy to Jon Bloom.

The team announced on Tuesday that Bloom will enter his first season as its new full-time radio voice on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM in October.

"This has been my dream job since I was 13 and I couldn't be more fired up for the opportunity to be the radio voice of the Phoenix Suns," Bloom said in a text message to the Republic.

This follows the retirement of Hall of Famer and "Voice of the Suns" Al McCoy, whose 51 years calling Suns games was the longest-tenured among the NBA team radio announcers. McCoy's fellow Hall of Famer and the late Chick Hearn is second to him as the Phoenix rival Los Angeles Lakers' radio announcer for 41 years. Late Boston Celtics radio announcer Johnny Most and Marv Albert's 37 with the New York Knicks are tied for third all-time.

Bloom began as a radio host and backup play-by-play announcer for the team in 2008. He also called the Suns' former G League team Northern Arizona Suns for three years, filled in for McCoy doing road games starting 2018, and called 56 games last season.

Bloom will continue broadcasting with former Suns player and analyst Tim Kempton, who will return for his 22nd season covering the team.
