Hollyoaks star Alex Fletcher predicts emotional return to filming

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks actress Alex Fletcher has revealed that she thinks returning to filming soon after a long production gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will get the cast feeling emotional.

Speaking to Inside Soap the star, who plays Diane Hutchinson, admitted that she is "nervous" about returning to her role when filming resumes on the soap on July 13.

"I can't believe we finally have a return date – I'm looking at my scripts and going, 'Will I remember all of this?'. I'm definitely a bit nervous, but we have an orientation day when we first go back, which I reckon we're all going to need," she said.

"I think it will be very overwhelming – there will be tears!"

Tears are likely to be on the horizon for Diane too as she struggles to support her husband Tony (Nick Pickard), who has been coping with erratic behaviour and mood swings after being told that he has a brain tumour.

However Tony and Diane are unaware that Tony's dad Edward (Joe McGann) has actually been lying about Tony's illness, as he attempts to force the couple apart so that he can try to rekindle his own romance with Diane.

Sadly Alex has hinted that things won't get much better for the couple in the near future, as she revealed that what's coming up for Diane and Tony is "quite sad".

"At the moment, Diane is trying to give Tony the benefit of the doubt – she doesn't want to just give up on him," she said. "But as his mood swings go on, she starts to get a bit frightened. She becomes worried about him being around the kids, and she's never felt that way around Tony before.

"I don't know how bad it's going to get, but it would be nice to have a soap couple that stays together. It will be lovely to get new scripts, as I really don't know what happens next."

Alex may have her fingers crossed for her character's future with Tony but she's delighted to have had so many dramatic storylines to work on over the years as Diane, including her IVF struggle and having her baby daughter swapped.

"I'm just grateful to keep getting such great storylines," she said. "I always think to myself, 'How are they going to top the last one?'. Then I go straight into something that's even more dramatic! It's full-on when you're in the thick of it – but I wouldn't swap it for the world!"

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm on E4.
