Hill powers Albany past Collinsville, to regional title

IOWA PARK — Perhaps Muenster inadvertently got one over on District 8-2A Division II foe Collinsville without actually playing the Pirates.

By giving Albany all it could handle last week, the Hornets woke up the defending Class 2A D-II champions. And the Lions took out their frustrations on Collinsville.

Albany senior Adam Hill scored five touchdowns, and Collinsville never mounted a response with the Lions rolling to a 52-14 victory for the Region II-2A Division II championship at Hawk Stadium.

Albany advances to play either Clarendon or Sunray next week in the state semifinals. Collinsville finishes the season with a 12-3 record.

“We probably went into last week a little over our head thinking it was gonna be an easy win, and we got hit in the mouth,” Hill said. “It was just good that we came out with the win, and so this week, the coaches coached us harder than we’ve ever been coached before. We were ready.”

While it took some time for the Albany offense to get going full steam, the Lions’ defense was prepared for Collinsville’s Air Raid attack from the start. The Lions held an offense averaging 51.8 points to two garbage-time touchdowns.

Collinsville quarterback Logan Jenkins had completed 73% of his passes, averaging 371.4 yards per game with 65 TDs and four interceptions in 13 games.

Jenkins completed 50% of his 46 attempts against Albany, throwing for 226 yards and three interceptions. It’s the third time this postseason Albany has had three interceptions in a game.

“It was scramble drills 24-7 in practice,” said Hill, who had a sack while playing defensive end. “Our coaches were harping on us to never lose contain. You have to give credit to our defensive coordinator, coach (Jimmy) Fuentes. Hats off to him. He had us ready.”

Albany scored on the game’s opening drive with Branson Beal adjusting to an underthrown heave by quarterback Chip Chambers for a 26-yard TD.

Chambers threw for two more TDs in the second quarter, including a 67-yard strike to Cason Fairchild and a 24-yard fade to Hill with 36 seconds remaining in the half. Hill was double covered on the play but fought off both defenders to make the catch.

“I really just remember two guys on me and then coming down with the ball and then getting excited,” Hill said.

It was Hill’s legs doing the heavy lifting in the second half, scoring four TDs and rushing for a majority of his 223 yards.

Just another day at the office for the Lions’ workhorse, who they intend to ride all the way to another state title.

“I love (being the team’s bell-cow), but the true ones are my o-line up front. I can’t do anything without them,” Hill said. “We’re all really excited right now, but we’ve got to keep working. A lot of us have been there before, but we can’t take it for granted.”
