High School Notebook: Lakeview has big weekend in softball, tennis

BATTLE CREEK - If was a big weekend for Lakeview sports with the tennis team and the softball squad hosting invitationals and coming away with some hardware.

Softball

The Spartan softball team won the Lakeview Invitational on Saturday, sweeping Sturgis and Marshall.

In the championship game, Lakeview beat Marshall, 9-2, with pitchers Delaney McCullough and Gia Palma combining to throw a three-hitter, striking out eight. Palma also helped out at the plate with a home run, single and two RBI. Brooklyn Berning and Marin McCullough each drove in two runs. In the opening game, Lakeview beat Sturgis, 14-0, as sophomore pitcher Kelsey Krick allowed two hits over five innings. Senior Faith Hewkin went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Camille Oxley added two hits, two runs and three RBI.

Tennis

The Spartan tennis team won the Lakeview Invitational with 22 team points with Coldwater taking second. Maddy Simmonds took first for Lakeview at No. 1 singles, with Sade Blackwell (No. 2 singles) and Emmy Ruger (No. 3 singles) also winning their flight.

Lakeview also swept each of the doubles flights, led by the No. 1 team of Dawt Sung/Ashley Thawmluai.

Track

The Harper Creek boys and girls track teams swept the Union City Invitational, taking first in both meets.

The Harper Creek boys had 189 team points in the eight-team meet to win the title. The Harper Creek girls had 199 points to place first.

Nehemiah Wert finished first for Harper Creek in the 100 meters in 11.33. Johnny Ramos won the 800 (2:07.53) and Ethan Tabiadon won the 300 hurdles (39.94). The Beavers' 400 relay took first with the team of Wert, Chase Nichols, Bronson Carpenter and Carter Brenner.

The Harper Creek girls took 10 first places. The Beavers' Aubree Newman won the 100 (13.20) and the 200 (27.13). Julia Faber won the 800 (2:32) and the 1,600 (5:39). The Harper Creek 400 relay finished first with the team of Camille Robinson, Newman, Cassidy Pratley and Sophia Kline. The 800 relay won with the team of Robinson, Pratley, Kline and Newman. The 1,600 relay took first as well with the team of Mia Helbing, Amelia Espinoza, Krista Brannen and Emma Monroe with the Beavers' 3,200 relay winning with the team of Faber, Olivia Ellenwood, Helbing and Monroe. In field events, Harper Creek's Izzie Miller won the shot put and discus and Pratley won the high jump

Elsewhere, Jack Bidwell had a record day for the Marshall track team. At the 35-team Grand Rapids Elite Challenge Invitational, Bidwell had a hand in two Marshall High School track records.  In the 1600 run, Bidwell broke a 44-year old record by a whopping six seconds, running a time of 4:14.2, which places him second in the Division 2 state rankings. Bidwell then led Marshall to victory in the distance medley, anchoring another school record.

Update

The annual All-City girls tennis tournament, originally scheduled for April 20, will be played on May 7 at noon at Pennfield High School.
