Late heroics earn Agoura boys lacrosse team a berth in CIF-SS Division 2 championship game
Gavin Dyet and Brady Russ both scored three goals as the Agoura High boys lacrosse team held off visiting Sierra Canyon, 11-9, in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 semifinals on Tuesday night.
Gavin Horowitz won 19 of 24 faceoffs as the Chargers (16-3) advanced to play Mira Costa in Friday’s championship game at El Modena High in Orange.
Tied 2-2 midway through the second quarter, Russ, Cody Meehan, Kieran Brennan and Alex Susuki found the net during a four-goal flurry as Agoura built a 6-2 halftime lead.
The Chargers led 7-4 after three quarters, but Sierra Canyon answers with a five-goal run to take its first lead at 8-7 with 6:29 to play.
But Dylan Jotkowitz and Tomas Amaya steadied the ship with a pair of goals 90 seconds apart and Russ followed with the eventual game-winning goal with 2:38 to play.
“Guys just stepped up and made plays when they had to,” Agoura first-year head coach Matt Horowitz said. “Our strength has been senior leadership and the kids showing leadership all year."
