New Hartford, Sauquoit Valley girls fall in state soccer semis

CORTLAND - There would be no return to the NYSPHSAA girls soccer finals this year for 2022 runners-up New Hartford and Sauquoit Valley.

Section III's class A and C champions were beaten in Saturday's semifinals. Sauquoit Valley was beaten 3-0 by The Mount Academy from Esopus in Class C play at Homer High School in the morning, and New Hartford, a 2021 state champion, was shut out 1-0 by Shoreham-Wading River at Cortland High School in the Class A semifinals in the evening.

Section IX The Mount Academy went on to win a championship Sunday, adding the Class C crown to back-to-back D titles in 2021 and 2022; Waterford-Halfmoon, the runner-up from Section II, was defending its 2022 championship. Section XI Shoreham-Wading River was beaten by Section I Rye in the Class A final.

Cincinnatus, the only Section III school to advance Saturday, won the Class D championship with its 2-0 victory over Section V Fillmore Sunday. Cincinnatus had beaten Section II Fort Ann in the semifinals.

At Cortland High School Saturday, Grace Hollis scored a goal assisted by Mia Magano with 10 minutes remaining in the first half and Shoreham-Wading River (15-3-3) dealt New Hartford (19-1-1) its second loss in four seasons. The Spartans had gone unbeaten in the Fall II season during the 2020-21 academic year and again during their championship season in the fall of 2021; the New Hartford win streak ended against Albertus Magnus of Section I in the 2022 championship match.

In Saturday action in Homer, Sauquoit Valley was beaten on three first half goals by The Mount Academy. Kayley Huleatt got the scoring started with a goal assisted by her sister Brooke. Brooke Huleatt scored about one minute later then added a second goal for the 18-0-0 Eagles. Sauquoit Valley finishes its first season at the Red Hawks with an 18-1-3 record; the team went 19-3-1 in its final season as Indians in 2022.
