Cal Quantrill ended the 2023 season in a much different standing than when it began.

He was coming off a 15-5, 3.38 ERA season in 186⅓ innings. He was securely in the Guardians starting rotation, which was finally healthy.

But little went right for Quantrill after that point. He ended up pitching only 99⅔ innings while dealing with shoulder issues, and he finished with a 5.24 ERA.

And Tuesday night Quantrill was designated for assignment along with pitcher Michael Kelly before the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. Quantrill and Kelly being taken off the 40-man roster allowed the Guardians to add, and thereby protect, Daniel Espino and Cade Smith.

Quantrill was eligible for arbitration and carried an expected $6.6 million salary, as projected by MLBTradeRumors. He was under club control for two seasons.

Quantrill could still return to the Guardians via a lesser deal, but the team has 10 days to trade him, place him on waivers or release him.
