Grizzlies storm back from 12-point deficit vs. Blazers, secure first win of season

The Memphis Grizzlies trailed by 12 points with a little under eight minutes left to play against the Portland Blazers. The game completely flipped after that.

Memphis finished the game on a 23-2 run to secure its first win of the season in a 112-100 victory.

Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies (1-6) with 30 points, and Jaren Jackson Jr. added 27. The Grizzlies also held the Blazers (3-4) to 39% shooting.

Santi Aldama made his season debut, and Bismack Biyombo got his first start. Both players helped the Grizzlies have more depth. Luke Kennard broke out of his shooting slump with four made 3-pointers.

FINAL: Grizzlies 112, Blazers 100

Fourth quarter

Grizzlies in a tough spot

6:44 left: Memphis trails 98-93 after a Marcus Smart 3-pointer. Portland has taken control in the fourth quarter, but the Grizzlies have put their starters back in the game. That includes Bismack Biyombo playing with five fouls.

End of the third quarter: Blazers 86, Grizzlies 82

The Grizzlies trail 86-82 after three quarters . Both teams went on runs with some of their best players stepping up. Jerami Grant hit three 3-pointers after Memphis built a double-digit lead. Desmond Bane hit a couple 3-pointers of his own, but the Blazers kept capitalizing on good offensive looks.

Halftime: Grizzlies 63, Blazers 55

Memphis is getting a balanced scoring effort from many of its key players. Jaren Jackson Jr. leads the Grizzlies with 16 points at halftime, but the biggest difference has been the bench. Memphis has a 25-8 advantage in bench points.

Santi Aldama and Luke Kennard giving good bench minutes isn't much of a surprise, but Kenneth Lofton Jr. and Jacob Gilyard have also give the team a boost. Lofton scored five points, and Gilyard had two assists, included a highlight pass to Jackson.

End of first quarter: Blazers 32, Grizzlies 30

The Blazers came out shooting well, and the Grizzlies fell behind double-digits. It was the first time Portland had a double-digit lead this season. Memphis responded and ended the quarter with two consecutive 3-pointers from Luke Kennard. Santi Aldama and Kenneth Lofton Jr. also added five points apiece off the bench.

Grizzlies starting lineup

Memphis planned to go with its usual five starters, but Xavier Tillman Sr. was a late scratch due to left knee soreness. David Roddy got the start on Friday in place of Tillman, but the Grizzlies are going with Bismack Biyombo today.

Biyombo was signed by the Grizzlies on Wednesday night to add depth at center. John Konchar will also be unavailable after playing 11 minutes on Friday.

Memphis will also have Santi Aldama available for the first time this regular season.

Grizzlies (0-6) vs Blazers (3-3)

Six games in and the Memphis Grizzlies are still trying to put a crooked number in the win column. The Grizzlies (0-6) are the only winless team remaining in the NBA.

Their next opportunity will come Sunday (8 p.m., Bally Sports Southeast) against the Portland Trail Blazers. Memphis lost 115-113 in overtime on Friday against Portland (3-3).

Grizzlies big man Santi Aldama is officially listed as questionable for today's game. If Aldama returns, the Grizzlies could have their preferred rotation of power forwards and centers. Bismack Biyombo didn't play much on Friday, but he's another option at center.

Sunday is the last game on the Grizzlies' road trip. They'll be back home on Wednesday against the Miami Heat.
