Gastonia, Shelby area high school top performers: Marier shines for Gaston Christian

Here is a daily list of the top performers from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties during the fifth week of winter sports action.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled courtesy of information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Friday, Dec. 22

Boys basketball

Gaston Christian rebounded from a loss Thursday in the Phenom Hoops Holiday Classic with a 74-63 win over Cox Mill. Gabriel Mabor Marier earned a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Cam Newman added 20 points and five assists. Joe Rhyne scored 12 points and had six assists.

Thursday, Dec. 21

Boys basketball

Crest bounced back from an earlier loss to rival Shelby with a 63-47 victory Thursday afternoon. D’Various “Pluto” Surratt led all scorers with 17 points. A.J. Adams added 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while King Rhodes finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Denorris Gist, Shelby: Led the Golden Lions with 13 points in a 63-47 loss to Crest.

Gabriel Mabor Marier, Gaston Christian: Earned a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in a 68-52 loss to Davidson Day.

Girls basketball

A 32-4 first half run allowed Crest to run away with a 64-26 victory over rival Shelby on Thursday. Harmony Allen and Monica Surratt each scored in double figures for the Chargers, who are 3-1 ahead of the Christmas break.

Brooklyn Swann, Hunter Huss: Had 15 points and five steals in a 57-30 loss to Easley (South Carolina).

Wednesday, Dec. 20

Boys basketball

LIncolnton moved to 8-0 with an 84-49 win over Hibriten. Freshman L.J. Smith led with 34 points to go with seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Cross Arias joined him in double figures with 19 points and three rebounds.

Tuesday, Dec. 19

Boys basketball

Ashbrook moved to 8-0 on the season and 2-0 in Big South 3A with a 77-73 win Tuesday at Kings Mountain. The Green Wave were led by Isaac Byers, who had 22 points. Jamarion Patton and Jamari Smith joined him in double figures with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

A.J. Adams, Crest: Scored a team-high 18 points in a 67-63 win over Hunter Huss.

King Rhodes, Crest: Had 15 points.

D’Various Surratt, Crest: Scored 12 points.

Chase Owens, Gaston Day: Scored 10 points in a 63-51 loss to Trinity Academy.

Griffen Simpson, Gaston Day: Led his team with 13 points.

Z-Man Gladden, Hunter Huss: Had 18 points in a 67-63 loss to Crest.

Zii Phillips, Hunter Huss: Scored a game-high 24 points.

Markell Carothers, North Gaston: Led his team with 22 points in a 51-35 win over Stuart Cramer.

Bobby Erwin, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored a team-high 21 points in a 69-59 win over Sugar Creek.

Victor Plessmoses, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 18 points and eight rebounds.

Carter Mason, North Gaston: Scored 16 points.

Taelan Whitley, Stuart Cramer: Had a team-high 12 points in a 51-35 loss to North Gaston.

Girls basketball

Savanni Harris’ 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining lifted Hunter Huss to a 50-49 win at Crest on Tuesday. The Huskies move to 3-2 overall, 2-0 in Big South 3A.

Harris finished with seven points. Myla Hoover led Huss with 23 points, while Brooklyn Swann added 12 of her own.

Nykira Arrington, Ashbrook: Had 14 points in a 45-16 win over Kings Mountain.

Duraejah Hardin, Ashbrook: Scored a game-high 20 points.

Kionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Earned a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with five blocks and seven assists in a 65-47 loss to East Rutherford.

Tionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Earned a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds to go with two blocks and three assists.

Imani Rhodes, Bessemer City: Had six points and 14 rebounds.

Kari Lee, Crest: Had 11 points.

Monica Surratt, Crest: Scored a team-high 20 points.

Amani Neely, Forestview: Scored 12 points in a 79-52 loss to South Point.

Tralyn Phillips, Forestview: Led her team with 19 points.

Blair Riley, Forestview: Scored 11 points.

Lyric Brown, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored 20 points in a 56-17 win over Sugar Creek.

Aubree Cammer, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 10 points.

Lexi Birtwistle, South Point: Scored a career-high 20 points, including six 3-pointers, to go with six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 79-52 win over Forestview.

Maddie Frank, South Point: Earned a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven assists.

Amya Graham, South Point: Earned a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Earned a double-double with 24 points and 10 steals, along with seven rebounds and six assists in a 60-15 win over North Gaston.

Hadley Womack, Stuart Cramer: Had 16 points, seven steals, five rebounds and three assists.
