FRIDAY REWIND: Plainview and Hereford football teams are for real

Let the doubters continue to doubt. Scoff at what I'm about to write all you want. We're a third of the way through the football regular season and the time has come to say what we've been too afraid to say until now — the Plainvew and Hereford football teams are for real.

The first two weeks saw both teams open 2-0 against weaker opponents. Plainview got past a beat up Pampa team in week three while Hereford topped a Shallowater team in the midst of a rebuilding year. This week was viewed as the real test as the Bulldogs played Dumas and the Whitefaces took on Tascosa. Mission accomplished on both fronts as the two squads came away with victories.

Some will point out that Dumas and Tascosa are also going through down years so far. Others will point out that the Hereford game was called early due to weather. Others like me will say that two teams that combined to win three games last year are now the only undefeated teams in their respective districts. These two deserve their credit.

Only one will be undefeated after this week after they face off against one another. That will be a game everyone should be paying attention to.

Golden Wolves

We all expected Canadian to be undefeated at this point of the season. It's become so common to see Stratford and Panhandle unbeaten at this point that it shouldn't surprise anyone either. But the Dalhart Golden Wolves, after going through tremendous adversity last year, are sitting at 4-0 after grinding out win after win.

Junior quarterback Kyler Read has been a sensational dual threat. He'll need to be at his best as the Golden Wolves visit a 2-2 Borger team that has been vastly improved this season.

Sensational Steers

Toss in Farwell as another team off to a great start. The Steers have been a solid squad for a while now, so it shouldn't be all that surprising. That's especially true when they still have two-way star Corey Stancell on the roster.

Still, this is a team that graduated the bulk of its line and has faced a tough schedule. To be 4-0 at this point is noteworthy. They'll take on a 3A squad looking for its first win in Friona this week.

Win number one for Kelly

Louis Kelly III is 26 years old. He'd been waiting for a head coaching opportunity since he watched his father and grandfather coach growing up. It took four weeks, but Kelly is finally a winner.

Boys Ranch defeated Morton 12-6 on Friday night to mark the first win in coach Kelly's career. The Roughrider defense hauled in six interceptions to set the tone. It should be the first win of many moving forward.

Other bits and pieces

  • This week also marked the first win for new Clarendon head coach Aaron Wampler, who was the previous head coach at Boys Ranch.

  • Since losing a heartbreaker to Stratford in week two, Sunray has outscored its opponents 165-0 as Armando Lujan has 16 total TDs in that stretch.

  • Muleshoe also remains undefeated and has dominated every opponent its faced heading into this week's game against Abernathy.

  • Miami is the only six-man team in the Panhandle with an undefeated record as they've beaten up on every squad they've taken on.
