Four Arizona HS track records fall during magical Saturday at Arcadia Invitational
It started with Saira Prince and ended with her during a Saturday night to remember.
The Gilbert Williams Field senior began an hour-long surge of Arizona high school track and field records going down during the highly prestigious Arcadia Invitatonal in Southern Caifornia.
Price won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.58 seconds, clearing all 10 hurdles without hitting one, and breaking the old mark of 13.59, set by Ashlee Moore of Chandler Hamilton in 2014.
Then came Mesa Red Mountain junior Tyler Mathews, the defending Division I state state champion in the 800 meter, breaking former Phoenix South Mountain star Brian Fair Jr.'s state record of 1 minute, 50.12 seconds with a time of 1:49.32. It didn't win him the invitational race (he finished second) but it put Mathews in the Arizona record book. Fair set the state record last year as a senior but ended up losing to Mathews in the state championships.
A little after that, Phoenix Mountain Pointe senior Jayden Davis broke the state record in the 400 meters with a time of 46.45 seconds. It was a third-place finish in the invitational field, but it bettered the previous state mark of 46.47, held by former Phoenix Desert Vista phenom Spencer Chase since 2009.
Fifteen minutes later, it was Prince's turn again.
She turned on the jets in the 300 hurdles and won easily in 41.24 seconds, breaking the state record of 41.38, set by Laveen Fairfax's Ma'Kayla in 2019.
It might have been the single best hour in Arizona high school track and field history.
