Fort Hill wins 1st WestMAC game; Frankfort, Southern, Calvary, Hampshire win

Mar. 25—POTOMAC PARK — Fort Hill scored eight unanswered runs to topple Mountain Ridge, 10-7, on Friday to win its first-ever Western Maryland Athletic Conference game.

The Sentinels (1-1) went 0-8 in the WestMAC the past two years and hadn't won a conference game since 2019, when they defeated Mountain Ridge in their second-to-last regular season game.

It was looking like Mountain Ridge would extend that streak when it plated five runs in the fifth inning Friday to lead 7-2. David Miller broke the tie with an RBI single, and Lane Frost tacked on two more with a two-out, two-RBI single to cap the scoring.

However, Fort Hill chipped away adding two in the fifth, and the Sentinels plated six in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Peyton Blocher put the Sentinels ahead with a two-out, bases-clearing double that made it 9-7.

Blocher went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, Bobby Brauer was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Logan Vanmeter was 2 for 3 and scored twice, Bryson Metz was 2 for 4 with a double, and Steven Spencer also doubled and scored twice.

Brauer got the start for Fort Hill but ended with a no decision, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Vanmeter got the win in relief, allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

John Delaney took the loss for Mountain Ridge in relief. Parker Ferraro got the start for the Miners, allowing five runs on nine hits in five frames.

Tyler Cook went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Miller was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Ferraro drove in a pair.

Southern 5 Petersburg 2

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Ryan Bird and Reece Tasker combined to hold Petersburg to just one hit and one earned run, as Southern topped the Vikings Friday to improve to 2-0.

The Rams took the lead for good in the top of the third inning thanks to a pair of Petersburg errors.

The Vikings got a run back in the fourth courtesy of a Southern error on a dropped pop up off the bat of Trace Rohrbaugh, but the Rams added an insurance run in the sixth on an errant pick-off attempt and another in the seventh via a Bird single.

Bird allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Tasker tossed 3 2/3 scoreless and hitless frames in relief to get the win, striking out five and walking one.

Jared Haskiell and Bird had multi-hit days, and Haskiell drove in two runs.

Colon Mauzy tallied Petersburg's lone base hit, a single. Clay Arbaugh scored both Viking runs.

Rohrbaugh took the loss on the mound, surrendering three runs (one earned) on two hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.
