Former Vanderbilt baseball player Ryan Flaherty hired as Chicago Cubs' bench coach | Report

Former Vanderbilt baseball player Ryan Flaherty is expected to be named Chicago Cubs bench coach, according to a report from Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic.

Flaherty played with the Commodores from 2006-08 under coach Tim Corbin and was a first-round pick of the Cubs in 2008. He played in MLB from 2012-19 with the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Guardians.

Since retiring after the 2019 season, Flaherty has been a coach and scout in the San Diego Padres organization, eventually being named the bench coach in 2023, where he worked with former Vanderbilt teammate and Cubs draftee David Macias.

The Cubs have other Vanderbilt ties as their current general manager is Carter Hawkins, who was also teammates with Flaherty and Macias on the Commodores in 2006 and 2007. They signed Dansby Swanson in free agency before the 2023 season and drafted Grayson Moore in the 2023 MLB Draft.
