Former St. George's football standout Wes Smith, a TCU student, shot and killed in Texas

Memphis native and Texas Christian University junior Wes Smith was shot and killed early Friday morning in Forth Worth, Texas.

Smith, a finance major and member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, was a walk-on with the 2021 Horned Frogs football team. Before attending TCU, he was a defensive back at St. George's Independent School and was named to the 2020 TSSAA Division II-AA all-state football team.

"Wes was a courageous and kind young man, known for his servant's heart," Timothy Gibson, St. George's head of school, wrote in an emailed statement to families. "There are no words to adequately convey what Wes and his entire family mean to St. George’s."

According to Fort Worth police, Smith was shot several times while he stood on a street in a popular entertainment district at about 1 a.m. Friday. A 21-year-old male has been arrested and charged with murder, Fox4 in Dallas reported.

“The grief in our community is great today,” TCU vice chancellor for student affairs Kathy Cavins-Tull said in a statement. “We are working directly with Wes’ closest friends and classmates. As soon as we have more information, I will send a more formal announcement with ways to gather in support of each other and in honor of Wes.”

Smith, a son of Dorree Jane and Philip Smith of Germantown, had attended St. George's since prekindergarten. He was student body president his senior year.

"Wes was always a leader who made everyone around him better," Gibson said.

“He loved his family, loved his friends,” Jason Murphy, lead pastor at Grace Chapel in Collierville, Tennessee, where members of Smith’s family attend church, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He just loved.”
