Former Patriots RB Rex Burkhead announces retirement after 10 seasons

Former New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead hung up the cleats on Monday evening, ending a 10-year career in the NFL. He made an announcement on X.

He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, before finishing off his run with stints at both the Patriots and Houston Texans. All told, he recorded 253 carries for 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Patriots.

Perhaps his most famous touchdown during his time in New England was the push to the pylon against the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2018 AFC Championship Game. The touchdown itself was the running back’s second of the postseason to that point. He would finish with three during the playoffs that year.

“I’d like to all my friends, fans and other family who have cheered me on throughout my career,” Burkhead posted. “From the days as a Plano Wildcat, Husker, Bengal, Patriot and Texans you all have encouraged me every single day and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.”

Burkhead was a great fit for a Patriots offense that heavily utilized pass-catching running backs with Tom Brady under center. His time in New England will certainly be remembered, and his contributions will never be forgotten.
