Former Mississippi basketball player accused of firing shots during car repossession

OXFORD, Miss. — A former University of Mississippi basketball player is in jail after police say he fired shots at someone Friday evening in Oxford, Mississippi.

Jamarion Sharp, 22, is charged with aggravated assault. He is held on a $100,000 bond.

According to Oxford Police, on April 26 officers say they responded to the area of Price Hall Park just after 5 p.m. regarding a shooting.

Several people of interest were quickly detained after police made it to the scene.

During the investigation, detectives say a vehicle was in the process of being repossessed when Sharp started shooting toward the victim.

“That’s wild I know some of the towing people and whatnot in town and of course, you don’t want to hear that someone got shot at,” Ole Miss alumni, Noah Blanco said.

There were no reported injuries, police say.

Sharp was then arrested and taken to the Lafayette County Detention Center.

The news of Sharp’s arrest comes as a surprise for many, especially because a motive for the shooting has yet to be announced.

“I’d like to hear more about what the deal was, did they try and let him know they were coming to get car,” Oxford visitor Steve Green said. “Was he aware? Was he wasted?”

Sharp just wrapped up the 2023-2024 season with the University of Mississippi. He’d joined the Rebels after transferring from Western Kentucky University.

The 7’5″ forward played in 31 games (15 starts) and averaged 3.3 points, 2.4 blocks and 4.1 rebounds per game with Ole Miss.

With the NBA Draft less than two months away, Sharp’s arrest has some questioning how his arrest will affect his draft stock.

“If he is a borderline player it might have an affect on him,” Green said. “I don’t think the NBA would want that kind of publicity, want that kind of image with him – if you can play you’ll get signed.”
