Falcons, Trufant don't appear close to deal
The Atlanta Falcons and cornerback Marcus Trufant, their first-round pick, don't appear close to having a contract worked out, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Trufant was the 29th pick overall last April, but the report cites a source from ProFootballTalk as saying the deal is not close to be consummated with the Falcons set to open camp in three days.
Rookie contracts are almost identical now from year to year, thanks to the league's slotting system, but complicating matters for Trufant is the fact that Brandon Weeden, a quarterback, was taken by Cleveland at No. 29 last year. Quarterback contracts are generally larger than that for other position players.
Weeden's deal was for $8.083 million deal with a $4.318 million signing bonus. Of that money, $7,511,288 is guaranteed. Trufant, as a defensive back taken at the end of the first round, probably can't count on getting that much from the Falcons.
