Leicy Santos gave Colombia the lead when she looped an effort over Mary Earps after 44 minutes, but saw her opener cancelled out after Lauren Hemp pounced on an error by Colombian keeper Catalina Perez six minutes into first half stoppage time.

Georgia Stanway set up Russo’s low finish to hand the Lionesses the lead after 63 minutes, and while Colombia pushed forward against the European champions an equaliser ultimately proved just out of reach.

England face Australia in the Women’s World Cup semi-finals as the Lionesses continue their knockout campaign in Sydney.

The European champions survived a major scare against Nigeria in the last-16, but improved to beat Columbia and will take on hosts Australia in the semi-finals.

Sarina Wiegman’s side will continue to be without Lauren James who was suspended for two matches after the 21-year-old stamped on the back of Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie.

The Lionesses will face Australia in Sydney after the co-hosts defeated France on penalties.

Lauren Hemp to ITV: “What an amazing feeling. I’m absolutely knackered right now, most of the team are. We put in a great performance. I think you saw the resilience in the squad and I’m so proud of this team.

“I thought we controlled most of the game to be honest, they had a few counter-attacks and we knew what they were going to bring and I felt we dealt with it quite well.

“Whenever we got the ball it looked like we were going to create something, I think the team were really special toady and long may that continue.”

“I think the atmosphere is going to be amazing,” the striker said. “I thought the crowd tonight was incredible. Every time we touched the ball they were booing but I think you just relish it because these are the atmosphere you want from stadiums. 75,000 and the Australian fans are going to bring a nice big bit of noise through. It’s going to be interesting and entertaining for everyone.

Sarina Wiegman admits she was unaware of just how big the rivalry is between England and Australia after Alessia Russo’s winner against Colombia sealed a 2-1 win and set up a World Cup semi-final with the co-hosts.

Asked if she was aware of the perennial rivalry between the two countries, England’s Dutch boss replied: “I just think it is going to be really big, but I’ve had a couple of questions about that now so it’s probably going to be bigger than I imagined now.

“So I’ll talk to my players and staff and see what that rivalry is then. I think the Australians and English can get along really well, and we’ve had such a warm welcome here, we’ve really enjoyed our time here in Australia, and I actually really like the people here.

“But that doesn’t mean there’s no rivalry, so we’ll see that Wednesday.”

How many games will Lauren James miss at Women’s World Cup after red card?

Lauren James has been handed a two-game ban by Fifa after being sent off during England’s last-16 win over Nigeria.

The Chelsea star sat out England’s 2-1 win over Colombia in the quarter-finals, and will now serve her second and final game in the semi-finals against Australia.

That means that James is in line to play for England again at the Women’s World Cup, either in the final should they defeat the Matildas on Sunday, 20 August, or in the third-placed play-off on Saturday, 19 August.

James was shown a red card after standing on Nigeria defender Michelle Alozie during the knockout game, which England won via a penalty shootout.

The Chelsea forward was given an automatic one-match suspension and feared being ruled out of the tournament altogether, with Fifa typically increasing cases of “violent conduct” to a three-game ban.

However, the governing body’s disciplinary committee showed some leniency - more here.

Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp was one of the Lionesses’s most dynamic attacking threats at Euro 2022, providing a steady supply of crosses into the box from the left while unafraid to cut inside for a shot, perfectly complimenting Beth Mead’s game on the opposite flank.

She only scored once in the tournament, during an 8-0 demolition of Norway in the group stages, but supplied the crucial extra-time corner that was poked home by Chloe Kelly in the final against Germany to secure the trophy and send an 87,000-strong Wembley crowd into raptures.

But Hemp, 22, can certainly finish, having scored 10 for her country at senior level in 38 games, four of which came in a brutal 20-0 thrashing of Latvia in November 2021.

Since last summer’s triumph, Sarina Wiegman has experimented with playing her as a number nine in a friendly against the USA last October, which paid off when Hemp scored early on in a 2-1 win, giving the manager fresh food for thought as she seeks a permanent replacement for retired record goalscorer Ellen White up front.

Australia coach Tony Gustavsson expressed his pride in his team for the dramatic penalty shootout victory over France on Saturday that, he felt, meant much more than just a place in the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup.

As the nation celebrated, Cortnee Vine’s winning penalty was already being compared in its impact to the one John Aloisi converted against Uruguay in 2005 to send Australia’s men to their first World Cup for more than three decades.

The Matildas have now exceeded anything the Socceroos have managed at a global level and the significance of being one of the best four teams in the world for the first time was not lost on an emotional Gustavsson.

“The amount of heart and soul and passion that this team showed tonight,” the Swede told reporters.

“There’s different ways of defining success but, for me, success is when you leave it all out there, no matter the result, you play with your heart and give it your best with the crest on your chest and the players did that tonight.

“That represents so much more than 90 minutes of football,” he continued.

“The honour it shows to the (former Matildas), all the little kids that this team will inspire in the next generation, and then seeing the nation unite the way it did.”

Although Vine will grab the headlines for her winning spot-kick, Gustavsson had a special word for goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who saved three penalties but missed the one that would have given Australia victory before sudden death.

“It was an emotional roller coaster for all of us. It was almost like it was written in the stars when Macca walks up to take the fifth... and then she hits the post,” he said.

“For Macca, missing that penalty and then staying in the game and being that player that wins the game for us, it’s unheard of. I mean, that mental strength of hers.”

Up next for the co-hosts is a semi-final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Wednesday against European champions England or Colombia.

“I think the number one thing is to embrace this historic night and feel that we are united,” Gustavsson said.

“I know that they’re going to celebrate this one but from tomorrow they’re going to be focused again; they’re extremely professional and they’re on a mission.”

Santos put Colombia ahead with 45 minutes almost up, whether on purpose or not we’ll have to wait and see. But then at the other end, Perez’s error was pounced upon by Hemp and it’s all square at the break.

The England No8 one of those on a booking from previous games; one more means she’d miss the semis if England get there. Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp are in the same position.

Mayra Ramirez is proving a real handful for the Lionesses, a big and powerful presence with excellent close control - she tees up Caicedo now and the eventual shot is blocked.

Colombia getting most of their joy down the flanks, but England are then able to dart into those spaces in the channels behind them if the South Americans over-commit. The final pass from both sides hasn’t been great so far.

Ramirez leaves Greenwood on the floor, possibly a flailing arm, but Caicedo’s cross is eventually cleared and away come England once more.

Replays show a pretty firm arm or two by Ramirez on Greenwood, who is left with blood coming from her nose. Again nothing from the officials - Sarina Wiegman not happy at all.
