Dispatches from Douglas County: Rodeo, Pride and more

Sep. 8—SUPERIOR — It was another busy holiday weekend in Superior!

The

Great Northern Classic Rodeo

took center stage at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds, and community members supported Duluth-Superior Pride events,

including the annual parade.

And, just in time for the start of the NFL regular season, we released the second installment in our two-part series remembering Vikings legend and Superior native Bud Grant.

In this month's episode, reporter Maria Lockwood sits down with Tom Hansen,

a senior lecturer at UWS. During Hansen's time as a broadcaster, he got to know Grant and talks about his memories of the legendary athlete and coach.

Here are some more stories for your consideration:

Douglas County author Carol Dunbar

talks with reporter Shelley Nelson about her second novel, "A Winter's Rime."

This story blew me away when reporter Maria Lockwood told me about it.

Some background: In June, officials at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center reached out to see if

we would run a column

about a Flag of Remembrance and Missing Man Ceremony they were planning to hold for a local veteran named Dan Knight who passed away and didn't have any living family. You'll notice the column has been updated since it was originally posted. More on that in a minute.

Well, after that ceremony, the Bong Center was contacted by an organization requesting verification of Knight's military history. That led them to the realization that Knight fabricated the details of his service. The Bong Center has since implemented a policy requiring DD214s (official military discharge paperwork) for everything — oral histories, donated artifacts, and more.

And officials want to spread the word about cases of stolen valor

so other organizations don't make the same mistake.

Northwestern senior Ian Smith, pictured above No. 51, had a day Friday, Sept. 1, blocking a punt, scoring a rushing touchdown and notching 11 total tackles during the Tigers' 52-6 victory over Spooner.

Reporter Reagan Hoverman found out more about Smith's talent

on both sides of the ball.
