Game notes: The formerly heated (and oft-televised) Original Six rivalry has lost yet another bit of juice with the trade-deadline departure of star forward Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers for a package of players (neither of which are likely to suit up tonight) and picks (none of which also will suit up tonight). But before we get to who will be playing at Little Caesars Arena, let's recognize Kane’s performances vs. the Wings: Since the 2007 No. 1 overall pick entered the league in 2007-08, just three players have more goals against the Wings than his 18: Steven Stamkos (20), Nikita Kucherov (20) and Alex Ovechkin (22). Not bad, considering the Wings and Blackhawks haven’t been in the same conference since 2013.

As for the current Blackhawks, well, they were sellers at the deadline, moving Kane, Max Domi, Sam Lafferty ad Jake McCabe — who had a combined 46 goals this season — in three deals. Left behind are the Jones Bros. — Seth and Jacob, the son of NBA journeyman Popeye Jones — plus former Red Wings Andreas Athanasiou (14 goals, 11 assists, minus-19 rating) and Petr Mrazek (3.74 goals-against average, 891 save percentage), whose performance goes a long way toward explaining why the rebuilding Blackhawks have the league’s second-worst record and a 27.9% chance of picking in the top two (meaning either generational forward Connor Bedard or current Michigan forward Adam Fantilli, the national scoring leader). The Wings’ odds of a top-two pick, meanwhile, are a scant 7.3%.

After this one, the Wings have a couple days off before, ahem, shipping up to Boston for the first half of a back-to-back home-and-home series against the Bruins, with both games on national TV. Three straight games on national TV … what is this, 2008? The Blackhawks, meanwhile, sink back into relative anonymity with a weekend trip to Florida to face the Panthers on Friday night and the Lightning on Saturday.
