Democratic candidates with the most (and least) Twitter followers
Which Democratic presidential candidate is the boss on Twitter (TWTR)? And will that candidate become the nominee?
If that’s the case, then U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will get the nod at the Democratic convention in Milwaukee next July. Bernie has two Twitter accounts, one with 9.4 million followers as of Friday, Aug. 2 and his official government office account with 8.5 million followers (don’t add ‘em together, there has to be massive overlap). Sanders has millions more than Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in second place (she also has two accounts) with 5.2 million and 2.9 million, as of Aug. 2.
Joe Biden, the front-runner, according to the polls, and former vice president, is in fourth place with 3.6 million, just ahead of his sometimes-sparring partner California Senator Kamala Harris, but behind New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, in third place, with two accounts, one with 4.3 million and another with 140,000.
A few other interesting points: You might think that the youthful former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, 46, would have more than 1.4 million followers. On the other hand, 67-year-old self-help guru Marianne Williamson has a strong showing with 2.7 million followers. Meanwhile, Wayne Messam — the Mayor of Miramar, Florida, and yes presidential candidate — who checks in last with only 8.1K followers, is in dire need of a social media consultant.
Whoever the nominee is, though, they’ll have all kinds of catching up to do. Donald Trump currently has 62.8 million followers — almost two times all the Democratic candidates combined.
Topping even Trump though, is Barack Obama, with 107.7 million followers. So maybe there's hope for the Democrats yet.
