Ellie Wilcoxson, Chase Almager named J&C Athletes of the Week for April 22-27

LAFAYETTE — West Lafayette junior softball player Ellie Wilcoxson and Delphi senior infielder Chase Almager were voted the Journal & Courier Athletes of the Week for April 22-27.

Ascarelli received enormous support with 6,151 of 6,532 votes (92.7% of ballots) over Delphi senior track athlete Miah Sinks to win the female nomination. Almager earned 1,361 votes (59.1%) over Faith Christian golfer Sam Peter, who received 940 votes (40.9%).

Here's what Ascarelli and Almager accomplished for their efforts between April 22-27.

Team contributions: Line drives and putting together competitive at-bats have been the norm for Almager, who is in the middle of a breakout year for the Oracles. Almager is batting .500 this season and went 3-for-8 and five RBIs combined in a 13-9 win over North Newton last Monday, 9-2 win over Eastern last Friday and a 15-14 loss to Rossville last Thursday. Almager was walked three times in last week's loss.

Team contributions: Wilcoxson's bat has come up big for West Lafayette in critical situations throughout the season. Last Monday was massive as she belted a base-clearing triple in the fourth inning against Lafayette Jeff. Wilcoxson's hit proved to be the factor in outlasting Lafayette Jeff 4-1 last Monday on the road. She followed her performance and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in a 14-3 win over Central Catholic. West Lafayette is 11-2 with Wilcoxson batting .290 with two triples and 11 RBIs this season.
