Day after receiving Philip Rivers' death glares, kicker Caleb Sturgis cut by Chargers

“Victory Monday” has added meaning this week for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers as the team released kicker Caleb Sturgis, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

A quick look in on Rivers’ mood:

The move comes less than 24 hours after Sturgis received death glares from Rivers throughout a game in which the kicker missed two extra points and a field goal. It was his first game back since a strained quad sidelined him in Week 5. The Chargers (6-2) prevailed to extend their winning streak to five, defeating the Seattle Seahawks, 25-17, after the Seahawks’ last-second touchdown attempt failed.

It’s the third consecutive game Sturgis missed a PAT and field goal, making him the first player since the Oakland Raiders‘ Jim Breech in 1979 to earn the unwanted feat.

Understandably, Rivers had had enough.

Sturgis missed the PAT in the first quarter that would have tied the game, 7-7. He missed a 42-yard field goal wide left in the third quarter with the Chargers leading, 19-10. And the final blow came after a Desmond King 42-yard pick-6 with 6:44 to play that would have put the Chargers up by 16.

The Chargers signed Sturgis to a two-year, $4.5 million contract that included $2.25 million guaranteed during the offseason. He was 9-for-15 on PATs, including 0-for-2 in a two-point win over the San Francisco 49ers, and 9-for-13 on field goals.

The team will likely go to Michael Badgley, who is back on the practice squad after filling in for Sturgis, according to Schefter. He’s 7-for-7 on PATs and 3-for-3 on FGs.
