David Wright's comeback attempt hits another significant snag

New York Mets third baseman David Wright just wants to play baseball. It’s been that way since 2015, but significant injuries and lingering issues have kept him off the field. After Tuesday’s news, Wright’s comeback attempt has hit another snag.

Wright will not be allowed to participate in baseball activities for the next eight weeks due to issues with his back and shoulder, according to Steve Gelbs of SportsNet New York.

Both issues have presented major problems for Wright in the past. The 35-year-old was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2015. That marked the beginning of his struggles.

Wright played in just 38 games that season. He attempted to return in 2016, but played in 37 games. Since his diagnosis, Wright has hit .260/.365/.436 over 338 plate appearances.

Wright again tried to comeback in 2017, but was diagnosed with a shoulder impingement in spring training. It was believed the injury may have been a side effect from a surgery that repaired a disc in his neck. Wright played in just three games in the minors before he was shut down again. He had surgery on his shoulder in September.

Wright’s latest setback puts him out until May at the earliest. Given how determined he’s been to return in the past, there’s a good chance Wright will have a bat back in his hands the first day he’s cleared to resume his comeback.
