A home run that put the Sooners ahead, catapulting them to a 3-1 win over Florida State to win a third consecutive national title, to run their winning streak to an NCAA-record 53 and solidify their place among the greatest teams in college softball history.
But after the game, when OU coach Patty Gasso brought up Lyons’ contributions, it wasn’t the home run that Gasso spoke about.
Instead, it was the early season rollercoaster where Gasso — among the most legendary coaches in the sport’s history, who won her seventh national title Thursday — ceded some of her control.
“I go to Grace Lyons and I say, ‘What do you want to do here? Do you want to do this? Do you want to do that?’” Gasso said. “Where normally as a coach, ‘This is what we’re doing, then we’re doing this, going there, then we’re doing this.
The duo got things going for the Sooners and Bahl was once again excellent in the circle as OU knocked off Florida State 5-0 at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Sooners (60-1) need one more win — in two possible chances — to win their third consecutive national championship (seventh overall) and crank up the debate on their place in college softball history.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
OU has not lost back-to-back games since February 2020.
The Sooners’ NCAA record winning streak moved to 52.
Oklahoma moves to the championship series after beating Stanford
Walking someone — anyone short of Jocelyn Alo or Babe Ruth — to get to OU slugger Tiare Jennings is almost unconscionable.
But that’s exactly what Stanford coach Jessica Allister did Monday.
That’s what the Sooners’ lineup does, forcing opponents into decisions that would normally be unthinkable.
On her 21st birthday, Jennings struck big when it mattered most, delivering a two-out, two-run double in the ninth to lift OU to a 4-2 win over the Cardinal in the Women’s College World Series at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Sooners have won 51 consecutive games, extending their NCAA record and moving into the WCWS Championship Series against either Florida State or Tennessee.
The best-of-three series begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Sooners (59-1) have beaten both the Seminoles and Volunteers this season, including Saturday’s 9-0 win over Tennessee in the WCWS.
Despite a program-record four consecutive trips to the WCWS, the Cowgirls again went home without the desired trophy — or even a shot to play for it in the championship series — this time ending the year a win away from the semifinal round.
A 47-16 season held promise for months, then turned south in April, but revived in the NCAA Tournament, only to end with an all-too-familiar, mistake-filled final game in the WCWS spotlight.
“What a great ballgame,” Florida State coach Lonni Alameda said. “Washington is a great ballclub. Knew it was going to be gritty. That was so much fun to be a part of. Of course, on the winning side of it is super fun.
The super-senior center fielder smiled and Gajewski’s anxious energy washed away.
“Alright, we’re good, like I thought we would be,” the Cowgirl coach told himself.
Even Gajewski couldn’t have imagined how good the sixth-seeded Cowgirls were going to be on Friday night, exploding for an 8-0 run-rule victory over 15th-seeded Utah at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium, avoiding elimination and extending their season into the weekend.
As Kiley Naomi slid into second base, the tag from Florida State’s Devyn Flaherty caught the Oklahoma State baserunner in the face, knocking her helmet off before she reached the bag.
Naomi wasn’t injured, but the Cowgirls were hurting.
Just another sign that Thursday wouldn't be their night at the Women’s College World Series.
“We looked like a JV team at times,” OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said. “We took really poor at-bats and we just weren’t clean. I don’t know why. I don’t have an answer. But I feel like we’ll respond well.”
Stanford starter NiJaree Canady frustrated OU for much of the game with velocity the Sooners hadn’t seen before this season.
“I think she was throwing 75 mph,” Jayda Coleman said. “She was really starting ahead. She was getting strikes.
“Then we realized we needed to take those pitches up in the zone. For some reason we felt like we needed to swing at them, but we got a little bit more disciplined as the innings went on.”
Legendary women's basketball star and broadcaster Rebecca Lobo shared a troubling example of sexism she encountered while coaching her son's youth basketball team.
