Cowboys News: All eyes on Prescott, Parsons still beefing with 49ers

Dak Prescott is once again taking fire after an ice-cold performance in San Francisco. While his track record against the 49ers doesn’t bode well for even getting out of the NFC postseason bracket, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave his quarterback a big vote of confidence on Tuesday. All this as a former opponent took a cheap shot at No. 4 on TV… and then social media reminded him of the last time he met Prescott on the field. The smack talk didn’t end there; Micah Parsons is in a war of words with several 49ers players two full days after the game went final.

Elsewhere, we’ve got injury updates, a deeper dive into the moments- both good and bad- that made up the Week 5 loss, and why Dan Quinn is faced with a real problem in potentially trying to replace Leighton Vander Esch. All that, plus the Chargers’ top rushing threat says he’ll be back to face Dallas, and the timely lesson the Cowboys could stand to learn from… the Texas Rangers?!? Here’s your News and Notes.

Dak Prescott is good, sometimes very good. And evidence is mounting it's not enough to win the Cowboys a Super Bowl :: Yahoo Sports

Prescott has a big-game problem, a January playoff problem, and a 49ers problem. In his past three meetings with San Francisco, Prescott has completed 60 of 104 (57.7 percent) passes for an average of just 201 yards per game. He has just three touchdowns against six interceptions. He’s taken nine sacks. His average QBR is 61.5. His yards per attempt is just 5.8. Forget winning a Super Bowl; right now, Prescott can’t even play average ball against the Niners in early October.

Making a radical change at quarterback or offensive playcaller isn’t in the cards, according to the Cowboys owner. “Dak Prescott is a quarterback that can get us to the Super Bowl,” Jones said. “That’s the way that’s going to be.” He was similarly dismissive of having Brian Schottenheimer take playcalling duties from Mike McCarthy, adamant that the Cowboys- as they have been built- are capable of living up to expectations.

Former NFL safety Donte Whitner tried to pass off “Dak Prescott sucks, period” as expert TV insight Sunday night. He added, “I see them trying to cover up for what he lacks.” One of the many who laid into Whitner on social media was Dolphins wideout Tyreek Hill, who asked, “what’s up with the old heads”. Whitner then took aim at Hill, claiming, “You’re fast but you’re lucky…. I’d have killed you on that field…. Mind your business homie..”

Being without the Pro Bowl kick returner for four to six weeks (due to a high ankle sprain) would be a serious blow to the Dallas special teams. If Vander Esch goes on injured reserve for his neck injury, it could provide an opportunity for Damone Clark, the only healthy linebacker remaining on the roster.

Dan Quinn allowed for the possibility of Parsons sliding back to cover at linebacker for a Vander Esch absence. But moving him off the ball for extended snaps neuters a Dallas pass rush that desperately needs to shine after the injury sustained by cornerback Trevon Diggs. Letting Parsons continue doing what he does best may be the best path forward, even if it means swallowing an unfortunately large pill at linebacker.

After Parsons accused George Kittle of making things personal after Sunday’s game and warned of the two teams meeting again in the postseason, 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel entered the chat. “It was already personal before the game started,” said Samuel, “42-10, I don’t think you wanna see us again. It might be a little bit worse.”

Damone Clark showed big-time hustle on special teams, reaching 18.55 miles per hour on his last snap of the night to finish off a punt return. And go watch the video to see Tyler Smith de-cleat 49ers linebacker Fred Warner and toss him nearly 10 yards.

The running back says there’s a “99 percent” chance he makes his return from a Week 1 ankle injury when the Cowboys come to SoFi Stadium on Monday night. Ekeler should provide a huge boost to a Chargers offense that has struggled without him, receiver Mike Williams, and center Corey Linsley. The seventh-year veteran is a trusted security blanket for quarterback Justin Herbert.

Jones said the team can take a cue from MLB’s Rangers, who have asked several players to step up when things got tough this baseball season and demand better from their teammates. “Certainly, we have players on our team that we know are fierce competitors, that have to step up, whether it’s a [Dak Prescott], a [CeeDee Lamb], a Zack Martin, and a Micah Parsons. A [DeMarcus Lawrence], Malik Hooker. Right on down the line, we’ve got a lot of good football players on this team with a lot of good football character.”
