Colquitt County girls qualify for state cross country meet

Oct. 25—VALDOSTA — The Colquitt County girls finished fourth in the Region 1-7A cross country meet at Freedom Park on Tuesday and have qualified for the state meet.

Colquitt County's boys did not qualify for the state meet, which will be held Nov. 3-4 in Carrollton.

Richmond Hill finished first in both the girls and boys races.

The school has been in Region 1-7A just two years and won both cross country races each year.

The Wildcats' Memphis Rich won the boys race in a time of 16:02.30. It was his second region championship in as many years.

Richmond Hill had the top three and six of the top seven finishers in the boys race.

The region champion Wildcats had 17 points and were followed by Lowndes, 49 points; Valdosta, 69 points; Camden County, 107 points; and Colquitt County, 143 points.

The Packers were led by James Fagan, who finished 21st with a season-best time of 19:10.30.

Also competing for the Colquitt County boys were Joshua Ramirez, who was 26th with a 20:06.70; Isaac Rodriguez, 31st, 20:55.00; Amicha Carroll, 32nd, season-best 21:07.70; Christian Nunez, 33rd, 21:10.20; Marco Lorenzo, 34th, season-best 21:39.90; and Nathan Perales, 35th, 22:50.40.

Freshman Julia Anastasio of Richmond Hill finished first in the girls race with a time of 19:33.80.

Teammate Julia Wilson, who won the region last year when the meet was held at Packer Park, was second with a time of 20:14.40.

The Richmond Hill girls finished with 21 points and were followed by Lowndes, 48 points; Camden County, 86 points; Colquitt County, 113 points; and Valdosta, 125 points.

The Valdosta girls did not qualify for the state meet.

Yarely Zongua was the top finisher for the Colquitt County girls, placing 17th with a time of 25:10.80.

The other Lady Packers running were Daniela Malagon, who was 20th with a season-best 26:00.80; Melissa Breedlove, 22nd, with a 26:53.90; Jada Gachuz, 24th, 27:16.20; Vanessa Torres, 30th, 29:47.20; Eidi Gachuz, 32nd, 30:51.70; and Jaelyn Wier, 33rd, 31:03.40.

Seven Colquitt County boys competed in the Region 1-7A junior varsity race, including Aiden Nunez, who was the team's top finisher, coming in 11th with a time of 20:58.

He was followed by Ben Yingling, who was 15th with a 21:36.21; Logan Wright, 25th, 24:01.10; Demar Witherspoon, 27th, 24:18.60; Willis McCranie, 31st, 24:44.30; Jedediah Manuel, 33rd, 25:32.60; and James Horne, 34th, 26:26.00.

Only runners from Colquitt County and Lowndes competed in the junior varsity girls race.

Representing Colquitt County were Judith Moctezuma, who ran a 26:08.70; Jasmin Mendoza, 31:02.21; and Natasha Romulo, 31:37.40.
