College notebook: MSU to honor Schuck by naming track & field complex

Oct. 24—The Free Press

MANKATO — Minnesota State will honor Hall of Fame coach Mark Schuck by renaming the track and field complex at 11 a.m. Friday.

Schuck will attend the ceremony, as will president Dr. Edward Inch, athletic director Kevin Buisman and track and field coach Mike Turgeon.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will include unveiling a sign to rename the facility in Schuck's honor. The facility, located off of Stadium Road behind the football practice fields, has served as the home of Mavericks' outdoor track & field since 2009.

During Schuck's 34-year stint as men's cross country coach, Minnesota State won nine North Central Conference cross country titles and one Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title. He was named league cross country coach of the year eight times and led the Mavericks to the national title in 1988. Over his tenure, Minnesota State made 25 NCAA appearances, with 16 top-10 finishes.

Schuck also served as head coach of men's track and field for 15 years and was selected conference indoor coach of the year 10 times and outdoor coach of the year four times. The Mavericks finished second in Division II in 1989, and Schuck was named the national coach of the year during the 2006 indoor season.

As a student-athlete, Schuck participated in cross country, track & field and basketball and graduated in 1969. He was inducted into the Minnesota State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Soccer switch

Due to rain in the forecast, Tuesday's nonconference Gustavus men's soccer match against Wisconsin-La Crosse was postponed.

The match will be played at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gustavus field.

Top setter

Gustavus Adolphus senior setter Kasie Tweet has been named the Division III player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Tweet averaged 11.8 assists per set in Gustavus' two conference wins last week. In the sweep over St. Olaf, she had 33 assists and 14 digs. The following day against Saint Benedict, she added 38 assists, which moved her into fifth place in team history. Tweet ranks fourth in Division III with 960 assists and is 13th in assists per set (10.11).

Tweet becomes the second Gustie player to be named National Player of the Week, joining Nora Holton (Oct. 23, 2018).

Defense wins

Gustavus Adolphus sophomore Eric Lyons Jr. has been named to the D3football.com team of the week after Saturday's 38-35 upset of St. John's.

Lyons made several key defensive plays in the victory, including an interception in the end zone with 1:50 remaining in the game.

The victory was Gusties first against St. John's since 2013 and the third in the last 35 years.
