CIF-SS Baseball Playoffs Roundup: Oak Hills beats Barstow in an showdown of local teams

Pauly Montoya struck out 10 batters and Austin Allan drove in six runs to lead the Oak Hills baseball team to an 18-1 victory over Barstow in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

The Bulldogs hosted the Aztecs in the High Desert’s only all-local matchup in the baseball or softball playoffs. Oak Hills is also the only local team left standing in the loaded Division 4 bracket, which also included Sultana, Apple Valley and Hesperia Christian.

Montoya set the tone early by striking out two batters in the first inning. He cruised the rest of the way as he allowed just one hit, a single to Michael Robles, over five innings.

Angelo Rizzo tossed two perfect innings in relief, with two strikeouts.

The pair of pitchers also had big days at the plate. Montoya went 3 for 5 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a run, while Rizzo also hit a home run, as he went 2 for 3 with two runs.

As for Allan, he ended a triple shy of the cycle, by going 3 for 4 with a three-run home run, six RBIs and two runs.

Tyler Martinez went 2 for 3 with a pair of walks and three runs, and Jacob Webster went 1 for 3 with one RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Oak Hills (22-6) is home against San Marino, which beat Citrus Hill 5-0, for the second round on Tuesday.

Here’s a look at how the rest of the local baseball and softball teams fared in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs.

Paraclete 4, Sultana 1

At Hesperia, the Sultans’ run came to an end in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Paraclete took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and Sultana tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning on a run-scoring single from Alex Gamez, who ended with two stolen bases.

But Paraclete scored again in the top of the fourth inning, and then in the fifth and seventh for good measure.

Eric Ruiz struck out nine batters and allowed two earned runs on six hits over five innings. Nico Torres allowed an earned run over two innings in relief.

Sultana ends the season with an overall record of 20-6.

Los Osos 14, Apple Valley 6

At Rancho Cucamonga, the season came to an end in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs for the Sun Devils, a year after making a run to the title game.

Isaiah Reveron went 3 for 4 with a home run and two runs; Noah Celie went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs; and Phoenix Matsumoto and Ryan Martinez each went 2 for 4 with a run.

Apple Valley’s season comes to an end with an overall record of 14-11.

Cerritos 13, Hesperia Christian 4

At Cerritos, the Patriots jumped out to a quick two-run lead but couldn’t hold on in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Cerritos scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and that proved to be enough.

Caleb Audet went 2 for 3 with two runs; Ayden Ortega went 2 for 3 with a run; and Cory Villalba went 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Hesperia Christian’s season ends with a 14-8 overall record, a year after making a run to the CIF-SS title game.

Viewpoint 13, Excelsior 3

At Victorville, Excelsior’s season came to an end with a mercy-rule loss in the first round of the Division 6 playoffs.

Ethan Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a run and a stolen base; Brandon Gill went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a stolen base; and Jacob Castillo went 2 for 4 with a stolen base.

Academy of Careers & Exploration 9, Cate 0

At Helendale, Zachary Roberts struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits to lead the Eagles into the second round of the Division 8 playoffs.

Roberts also led the offense by going 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs.

Ben Carlson went 2 for 4 with a run and a stolen base; Logan Monter went 2 for 4 with a run and a stolen base; and Bode Harkness went 2 for 4 with a RBI.

ACE (14-6) is on the road for the second round against Azusa, which beat Santa Rosa Academy 10-0.
