Cheboygan Triple Threat 3-on-3 tournament receives another huge turnout of basketball players

CHEBOYGAN – It’s an event that just keeps getting bigger.

Last Sunday, the second annual Cheboygan Triple Threat 3-on-3 basketball tournament received a monster turnout of players from several different communities. On the day, there were a total of 49 teams, 10 divisions and 185 players, ranging from areas such as Mackinaw City, Pellston, Gaylord, St. Ignace, Petoskey and Alpena.

“I have to give a huge shout out to our sponsors and amazing volunteers,” tournament organizer Walter Hanson said. “Without them, this event wouldn't happen. There were a few things we changed from last year that really helped things run more smoothly, such as tournament rules and our ability to speed the tournament more efficiently. We have taken notes this year and look to improve even more going forward. One of the biggest differences was our experience as a staff.”

Starting at about 8 a.m. and lasting until the middle of the afternoon, kids competed against each other in matchups at both Cheboygan High School and Middle School. In addition, Cheboygan’s Key Club, National Honor Society and volunteers from both the Cheboygan boys and girls basketball teams helped volunteer and officiate the event.

“I love to see the collaboration of our community putting on a fun and safe event for young athletes in our area,” Hanson said. “The biggest smile to my face was watching kids who don't play basketball for their school have the chance to create teams, compete, and truly enjoy the game. It was a joy to see the excitement building for the event."

Going forward, Hanson said he would like to expand the tournament, especially with interest being high.

“I believe if we got more of the community involved it would really grow this event into something even more amazing,” Hanson said. “We would love to attract more visitors to the area to show them just how special it really is."

In the end, Hanson believes the event is an excellent opportunity for local athletes to become basketball players, fall in love with the game, and learn all the important life lessons the sport has to offer.

“Offering these events close to home allows more youth in our community to play basketball at a high level while avoiding the expenses that are commonly associated with travel sports,” Hanson said.

Proceeds for the event will go to the Cheboygan varsity girls basketball program.
