Iowa is coming off a 24-14 victory over Utah State on Sept. 2 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. It wasn't a dominant performance for the Hawkeyes, but the outcome was never in doubt. Iowa's final 11 possessions covered just 208 yards after the Hawkeyes' first two possessions accounted for 114 yards — both touchdowns. The sputters that followed saw the Hawkeyes produce just 10 points after their initial 14, with seven points over their final 10 possessions. It's clear there's still offensive room to grow. Luke Lachey had a career-high seven receptions. Jay Higgins had a career-high 16 tackles.
Iowa State opened with a 30-9 feel-good victory over Northern Iowa on Sept. 2 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. After a tumultuous off-season, the Cyclones did a lot of things right in the opener. Rocco Becht completed 10-of-13 passes — 77% — for 113 yards and two touchdowns (and zero interceptions). Chase Contrarez kicked a 56-yard field goal. Jeremiah Cooper had two interceptions, including a pick-six.
