Browns sign QB Hanie

Journeyman backup quarterback Caleb Hanie signed with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday.

With health questions likely to impact head coach Rob Chudzinski's decision on a starting quarterback this week, Hanie adds needed insurance for Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden. Campbell was out last week, when a fourth quarterback change this season made Weeden the team's starter again.

However, Weeden sustained a head injury and his status is up in the air. Campbell was cleared for light workouts, but the Browns aren't sure if he will clear the NFL concussion protocol before Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

Linebacker Brandon Magee was placed on injured reserve with a pectoral injury to open a roster spot.

Campbell was injured during a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers when he was decked by a blind-side blitz from cornerback William Gay. He threw for 124 yards and lost a fumble. He was replaced by Weeden.

Hanie spent time in training camp with the Baltimore Ravens before getting cut. His longest NFL stint was in 2011, when he went 0-4 as the Chicago Bears' starter. He was the third quarterback for the Browns all of last season and worked out for Cleveland last Tuesday.
