Broncos appreciate brotherhood and support among NFL teams, players and fans

Prayers and support has been pouring in for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin ever since he collapsed on the field during Monday Night Football.

Fans, teams and players showered Hamlin’s charity toy drive with more than $7 million in donations, including $10,000 from Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciara.

In a sad situation, the love and support shown for Hamlin, his family and his work in the community has been a positive development.

“Seeing the pouring of love that has been given to Damar and to his foundation and seeing how the NFL community has come together to support what is a tragic time — I think that’s been a small but really cool positive,” safety Justin Simmons said Wednesday. “That’s one thing that I’m always appreciative of — the brotherhood behind the shield and the guys that have your back.”

Hamlin showed “remarkable improvement” from Wednesday to Thursday and he is now awake and making steady progress. That’s the news that everyone has been hoping for since Monday.

“Any time you see somebody in the brotherhood of football, and anytime you see somebody go through what we saw the other night, you want to find a way to make a difference,” Wilson said. “There are so many people that have made a difference. People coming together to donate, to help.

“Even the people from the Bengals waiting outside [of the hospital] just to cheer him on and hope that he’s okay — the fans. I saw an image of the Buffalo Bills fans and the Bengals fans just locking arms, praying, and lighting candles. Those are the things that go such a long way.”

Fans can donate to Hamlin’s toy drive on his GoFundMe page.
