Braves sign reliever Nick Anderson to non-guaranteed deal

Nov. 12—The Atlanta Braves made a move to bolster their bullpen for 2023, agreeing to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with Nick Anderson on Friday.

Anderson is trying to find his way back to the majors after missing much of the last two seasons with injuries. After sitting out much of 2021 before undergoing surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, Anderson returned to action this past August.

The 32-year-old Anderson made 19 appearances within the Tampa Bay Rays' organization, predominantly with Triple-A Durham. He pitching 17 1/3 innings across 19 games, tallying a 5.19 ERA.

Before his period on injuries, Anderson had excelled since making his major league debut as a 28-year-old rookie with the Miami Marlins in 2019. That year, he went 5-4 with a 3.32 ERA and 110 strikeouts across 65 innings between the Marlins and Rays, following a deadline-day trade to Tampa Bay.

During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Anderson made 19 appearances and recorded six saves, only allowing one earned run across 16 1/3 innings. He had 26 strikeouts to only three walks.

To make room for Anderson on the 40-man roster, the Braves designated infielder Rylan Bannon for assignment.
