Brad Brownell salary bonus: How much Clemson basketball coach earned for Elite 8 run

CLEMSON — Clemson basketball's longest run in the NCAA Tournament in 44 years was not only massive for coach Brad Brownell's standing in the program but lucrative for his bank account.

The Tigers (24-12) defeating New Mexico in the round of 64, upsetting Baylor in the round of 32 and stunning Arizona in the Sweet 16 allowed Brownell to earn $275,000 in bonuses.

Brownell, who is the winningest basketball coach in school history with a 265-189 record, made $2.76 million this season with $2.75 million coming from Clemson. The added incentives helped him reach around $3.035 million.

The 14-year coach received a contract extension in 2021 through the 2025-26 season. The deal pays him $3 million in the final two years.

Here is the breakdown of the bonus amounts Brownell achieved — and missed — during Clemson's March Madness journey.

Earned:

  • $100,000: NCAA tournament bid

  • $50,000: NCAA round of 32 appearance

  • $50,000: NCAA Sweet 16 appearance

  • $75,000: NCAA Elite Eight appearance

Missed:

  • $75,000: NCAA Final Four appearance

  • $100,000: NCAA Championship appearance

  • $300,000: Win NCAA Championship
