Boys Best of the Week: Pleasant sets records in bowling; River Valley gets wins on lanes

Pleasant's boys bowlers enjoyed a record-setting week last week.

The Spartans put up a new school record (two regulation games and two Baker games) with a 2,724 to blast Marion Harding's 2,115 during a Mid Ohio Athletic Conference match at Cooper's Bowl. During the contest, Dawson Hall set Pleasant's two-game series record with games of 237 and 283 for a 520.

Backing Hall were Nolan Ludwig with a 237-244 581, Tucker Ludwig with a 208-266 474, Jayden Miller with a 224-191 415, Carter Colby with a 206 game and Johnathan Maran with a 177 game. They posted a 451 in two Baker games of 247 and 204.

For Harding, Clayton Spiegel had a 202-232 434, while Noah Daigneau went with a 368, Allan Eaches a 352 and Kadin Saban a 322.

Pleasant also went on the road to Goshen Lanes to beat Mechanicsburg 2,833-2,569 (two regulation and four Baker games) as Nolan Ludwig led with a 237-222 459, and Miller added a 216-228 444, Dawson a 182-256 438, Maran a 200 game and Colby a 178 game.

More Bowling

● River Valley had a big week on the lanes as well. They opened with a 2,142-1,955 victory over Harding at Cooper's Bowl as Andrew Karrick paced them with a 245-255 500 series. For Harding, Eaches went 235-168 403 with Gaven Stoll adding a 362. Karrick again stayed hot and led the Vikes with a 242-246 488 in a 2,218-1,682 win over Galion.

RV picked up two more wins, beating Cardington 2,097-1,884 at Morrow Lanes and Mount Gilead 2,114-1,639 at home at Bluefusion. Mason Self shot a 218 game and 410 series in the Cardington match, while Karrick had a 232 game and Self a 449 series against MG. Wyatt Irwin shot 230-226 456 for the Indians.

They wrapped up the week by competing at the Pioneer Baker Bash hosted by Jonathan Alder. Out of 34 teams, they finished 11th, missing the cut for the top eight elimination brackets by 43 pins. North Union was 27th.

● Harding earned a 2,212-1,678 win over Highland with Stoll firing a 245-238 483, Eaches a 366, Saban a 362 and Daigneau a 354.

● North Union fell to Urbana 2,461-2,276. Zach Howald had a 207-196 403, Logan Otten a 202-199 401, Braden Rhodes a 305 and Owen Oreilly a 303.

Swimming

Mount Gilead competed at the Marion Family YMCA on Saturday against River Valley, Elgin, Marion Haring, Pleasant, Upper Sandusky and Mansfield Senior. Jaxon Tinch won the 50-yard freestyle, while Luke Frazier took to the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 free relay was second and the 200 medley relay third. No other results were reported.

Basketball

● Highland earned its first win of the season in defeating Mount Gilead 48-38. Toby Rogers scored 18 for the Scots and Mitchell Sayers 15 for MG. In a 74-21 loss to Shelby, Kadyn Reichenbach had 10 for Highland

● North Union dominated Fredericktown 80-46 as Mason Bright led with 17, Max Parish had 16, Tyler Krebehenne 14, Tyler Huff 10 and Miles Hall and Ryaln Keever eight each. In a 55-45 win over Graham, Parish led with 18, Krebehenne with 12, Hall with 10 and Nolan Draper with nine

● Pleasant rolled in a 79-49 win over Northmor. Carson King nailed five 3-pointers to end with 26 points, while Trey Booker had 16 and Wiley Smith eight for the Spartans. Grant Bentley scored 16 and Hunter Fulk and Drew Hammond eight apiece for the Golden Knights.

● Denim Myers put up 20 points, Talan Blankenship 15 and Diesel Myers nine in a 58-49 Gilead Christian win over Senedot.

● Cardington's Warren Garrison fired in 22 points, A.J. Brehm 19, A.J. Hall 12 and Journey Williamson 11 in an 80-47 victory over Bucyrus. Brehm put up 26 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in a 73-50 win over Fredericktown as Hall added 19 points and Garrison 17.

● RV's Carson Smith recorded 27 points in a 77-71 road loss to Jonathan Alder. Sawyer Weston added 17, Ayden Kenney 10 and Chase Smith nine for the Vikings.

● Elgin's Stephen Castillo-Carey knocked down six 3-pointers for 26 points as Nash Lust backed him with 11 and Donaven Stith with nine in a 72-61 loss to KIPP Columbus. Castillo-Carey went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth period and scored 20 points for the game in a 51-44 win over North Baltimore as Nate Freshour chipped in with nine, and Stith and Malachi Frye added eight each.

● Mount Gilead beat Danville 55-37 with Rowan Fitzpatrick getting 15 points, Sayers 10, Jacob Wilt nine and Carson Trainer eight.

● Ridgedale dropped a 63-31 decision to Ridgemont. Nathan Thiel had nine points for the Rockets.

  • There were 2,205 votes in last week's poll with River Valley basketball's Ayden Kenney winning it with 1,022 votes (46 percent) after putting up a career-high 31 points in a win at Ontario. Other nominees were Cardington basketball's Brayden Lackey, North Union basketball's Max Parish, Pleasant wrestler Daxton Chase, Elgin wrestler Quentin Harrison and Gilead Christian basketball's Talan Blankenship.

  • Voting for the Marion Star Preseason Swimmer of the Year for boys concluded with RV's Andrew Deem earning 599 of 1,385 votes (43 percent) to win the honor, while Pleasant's Landon Severns and Mount Gilead's Luke Frazier made the top three. Other nominees were RV's Chase Osborne, MG's Hayden McClelland, Pleasant's Joseph Bradac and Elgin's Jacob Faust.
