Blue Jays Roundup: Boys hockey to play on final day of WDA tournament

Feb. 16—BISMARCK, N.D. — When your opponent spends 16 minutes in the box, usually you have a pretty good shot at winning a hockey game.

At least, that was the case for Matt Stockert and the Blue Jays on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Jays took advantage of Williston's eight two-minute minors to defeat the Coyotes 6-1 in the WDA Tournament loser-out game.

The Jays' win sets them up to face top-ranked Century in the state qualifying round. The face-off is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

"The boys figured out a way to put yesterday aside and win a game to have a chance tomorrow to go to State," Stockert said. "I felt we played a good 51 minutes of hockey making it difficult for Willoston to do what they wanted to do."

Jamestown and Williston were square at zero for the first 13:48 of the game but when handed the chance, Jamestown — helped by the powerplay — scored four goals in 3 minutes and 10 seconds to go up 4-0.

Vaughn Romsdal broke the ice at the 13:48 mark, making good on a pass from Nate Walz. Walz then doubled back and scored his first goal of the tourney 69 seconds later. Walz was assisted by John Belzer.

Belzer got in on the action next, scoring an even-strength goal with 1:50 left to play in the period. Tyson Jorissen wrapped up the first with a goal that beat the buzzer by two seconds.

Williston struck first in the middle frame when Jacen Rustand pushed one past Blue Jay goaltender Carter Borg. Romsdal scored the Jays' lone goal in the second off a pass from Walz and Belzer.

Grant Lunde put the final nail in the coffin, notching an empty netter with 50 seconds left in regulation. Gavin Iverson and Jackson Maddock were credited with the assists.

Borg was in net all three periods tallying 20 total saves.

"Tomorrow we have to just leave everything on the ice no matter who we play," Stockert said. "It should be a heck of a lot of fun."
