Billy Napier reveals when Florida football’s summer phase begins

The end of the spring academic semester recently came to a close as 62 University of Florida student-athletes received their diplomas before heading off to the next stage of their lives. With the passing of the season, next up is the summer session for the Gators, for which a starting date was recently revealed by head coach Billy Napier.

“They’ll be back here in the middle of May for summer school. We officially start our summer training on May 29,” Napier told Gator Online’s Keith Niebuhr prior to meeting with the Panhandle Gator Club. “Our staff, we’ve got a couple of spots open that we’re trying to add players to through the portal.”

The summer regimen begins in the final days of May and ends with the start of preseason training camp. During this phase, the team will winnow out the leaders and followers while also giving the coaching staff opportunities to further drill the corps on the fundamentals of the game.

“Training camp is essentially two spring practices to some degree and we’re going to have, you know, 18 OTAs this summer,” Napier said. “A lot of throwing and catching, a lot of meetings. A lot of competition left here.”

With the biggest team questions still remaining in the quarterback room, it will also give the competing signal-callers a chance to earn the starting job come Aug. 31. The Gators open up their 2023 schedule on the road against the Utah Utes, with the start time yet to be determined.
