NEW BERLIN 42, AUBURN 40: At Doglio Gym, Gannon Dodd loomed large in the final seconds to come away with a thrilling Sangamo Conference road victory in a battle for first place.

The 6-foot-4 senior not only supplied the go-ahead free throws with 3.7 seconds left but also the game-winning block against Carter Hunley just before the buzzer. Dodd scored all of his five points in the second half.

Hunley evened up the contest at 40-all by using the glass against Tanner Frye while also drawing the foul with 11.8 seconds left, but his free throw attempt rattled out. Dodd barreled toward the other end and attacked the base line for a blocking call.

Aydin Littig dialed up four 3-pointers and led New Berlin with 14 points. Frye had three 3s for nine points. Lucas Bixby added six points.

“We had a bunch of different guys step up,” Dodd said. “Aydin and Tanner had a couple of 3s, Jacob (Roberts) played great defense like he always does and Lucas just dominated on the boards. I didn’t have a great game, but everyone else picked me up. We need everyone to win it going into the postseason and the rest of conference play.”

New Berlin (20-7, 5-1 Sangamo) survived a string of turnovers down the stretch, including three in the final 90 seconds. With Riverton’s 46-30 loss to Athens, New Berlin has claimed sole possession of first place in the Sangamo after winning the crown outright last season.

“Although I don’t think we played well,” New Berlin coach Blake Lucas said, “I thought it was a gutsy win and our kids are figuring out how to play with energy and passion for 32 minutes. It’s fun to see them mature and that’s what it’s really all about.”

Clayton Kessler led Auburn (22-6, 4-2) with 11 points. Hunley and Cooper Carter each had eight. Sawyer Smith has remained out of the lineup the past two weeks due to a knee injury, but Auburn coach Seth McCoy is hopeful the senior point guard may return next week.

“I love my team, I love the guys in the locker room,” McCoy said. “We’re just going to keep plugging away. The sun’s going to come up tomorrow and the Trojans are going to get better.”
