Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid LIVE: Champions League result and reaction after entertaining draw in Munich

A brace from Vinicius Junior earned Real Madrid a 2-2 away draw against Bayern Munich to leave the Champions League semi-final tie finely poised after the first leg.

The Brazilian opened the scoring against the run of play in the first half, collecting Toni Kroos’ defence-splitting pass before cooly slotting past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern, though, turned the game on its head after the break with two second-half goals in the space of four minutes. Leroy Sane smashed home past Andriy Lunin before Harry Kane converted from the spot after Lucas Vazquez hauled down Jamal Musiala inside the box.

But Kim Min-Jae’s late foul on Rodrygo inside the area allowed Vinicius to double his tally for the night from the spot and rescue a late draw for Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu.

A game that had almost everything was never going to leave Real Madrid with nothing. That’s just not how they do things in the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s side probably deserved to lose. They were definitely the inferior side. Their English star had a much more challenging night than Bayern Munich’s English star.

And yet it is the 14-time champions that of course leave a big European night that bit more satisfied. Real Madrid have a 2-2 draw and now have the chance to win this semi-final at their own stadium.

It didn’t quite go the way everyone expected from Vinicius Junior’s opening goal given how impressively Bayern Munich rallied. And yet the Germans - and even Harry Kane - will feel they could have scored far more.

That subtle psychology might be crucial for the second leg as Bayern still try to save their season and Madrid only seek to embellish theirs, and their record.

It was a nine-year low, leaving Bayern Munich destined to plummet to depths they had not experienced at the end of a season for 12 years. When Thomas Tuchel’s departure was announced, they had just lost three consecutive games, for the first time since 2015. Bundesliga losses to Bayer Leverkusen and Heidenheim, one emphatic against the league leaders, the other embarrassing against relative minnows, rendered it a formality that, for the first time since 2012, Bayern would not be champions. Sandwiched by them the other setback in a disastrous eight days was 1-0 to Lazio. To compound a wretched season, Bayern risked missing out of the Champions League quarter-finals, something they had only done once since 2011.

Tuchel, Bayern said in February, would stay until the end of the season. The temptation was to wonder if he would make it that far. Now an alternative exit feels feasible. As Harry Kane already knows, Jude Bellingham isn’t shy about telling people what he thinks. That isn’t necessarily to berate them, either. Two giants of European football collide in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash as Bayern Munich host Real Madrid at Allianz Arena on Tuesday (8pm, TNT Sports 1).

What was forecast to be an all-English last-four encounter when the draw for the competition’s latter stages was made is instead a showdown between the two marquee clubs of Germany and Spain after Bayern overcame Arsenal, while Real defeated Man City in the quarter-finals.

When Thomas Tuchel’s departure was announced, they had just lost three consecutive games, for the first time since 2015. The Champions League semi-finals start this week and the initial match-up of the first-leg encounters sees Bayern Munich host Real Madrid, a meeting of two of the three most successful clubs of all time in the European Cup.
