Baseball: Quincy walk-off win leads to split, Union City splits with Concord

SPRINGPORT – The Quincy Orioles have had a habit of waiting until the very last moment to put games away, relying on several walk-off wins early in the season. Well Tuesday night was no different, as the Orioles split with Springport in a pair of games that came down to the wire.

Game one saw Quincy take the early 2-0 lead thanks to RBIs from Brennan Allman and Grant Holroyd in the third inning.

Springport made their comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, as a series of fielding errors with two outs in the inning allowed the Spartans to put up four runs, taking the 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.

After getting the first base runner on the Orioles went down in order, finding the final score of 4-2.

Allman took the loss on the mound for Quincy after throwing six full innings, allowing six hits and four unearned runs with one walk and five strikeouts.

Allman also led the effort at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Mickey Graves finished with two hits while Grant Holroyd knocked in a run.

Game two of the twin bill came down to the very last at-bat as an Alex Barry walk-off single allowed Graves and Copas to score to give Quincy the 4-3 win.

Quincy took the early lead with a home run off the bat of Holroyd in the second inning, giving Quincy the 1-0 lead.

Springport tied things up in the third and took the lead with two runs in the fourth for the 3-1 advantage.

Quincy led off the bottom of the seventh innings with back-to-back singles from Allman and Graves. Both were driven home one batter later as Ethan Copas doubled to deep centerfield, closing the score to 3-2.

After Holroyd was intentionally walked to load the bases, it was Barry with the late inning heroics, hitting a hard ground ball up the middle that scored both Graves and Copas, giving Quincy the epic 4-3 walk off win.

Jimmy Maynard took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing an inning in relief, allowing no hits and two walks with a strikeout. Graves made the start, throwing six innings while allowing six hits and three runs with six strikeouts.

Holroyd led the Quincy effort at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a home run, two walks, a run scored and an RBI. Also notching multiple hits in the win were Graves, Copas and Mickey Connin, while Barry, Holroyd, and Copas all drove in runs.

Union City splits with Concord

CONCORD – The Union City Chargers split with Concord on Tuesday, dropping game one 8-6 before coming back to win game two 6-2.

Game one saw Ryan Zweng take the loss on the mound after throwing four innings, while allowing four hits, six runs, and five walks, with three strikeouts.

Tucker Zweng led the Union City offense in game one with his first career varsity home run, a solo shot. Putting together multi-hit games for the Chargers were Rick Austin with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored; Ryan Zweng with a single and a double with two RBIs and a run scored; and Aidan Decker who finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Alex Boyer added a double and a run scored.

Game two saw Union City out hit Concord 12-4 to roll past the Yellow Jackets for a 6-2 win.

Eli Payne took the win on the mound after throwing all seven innings, allowng four hits and two runs with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Decker brought the big bat to the game, going deep for his second home run of the year. Decker finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Also adding to the Charger win was Austin with a double and two runs scored; Owen Jackson with a double, an RBI and a run scored; Ryan Zweng with a perfect 3 for 3 effort, adding two RBIs and a run scored; and Reed Goodwin with two singles.
