Baseball-Highlights of Tuesday's MLB games

April 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games. Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3 Marcus Stroman contained Baltimore's powerful lineup, and Toronto took the series opener against its American League East rival. Toronto also handed the Orioles their first loss in six games at Camden Yards this season. The defending division champion Blue Jays won their third consecutive game, while Baltimore lost for the fourth time in five. Stroman (3-0) allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk over seven innings. He won for the 11th time in his past 12 decisions, dating back to 2014. Nationals 7, Marlins 0 Bryce Harper hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run seventh inning as the Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins 7-0 on Tuesday night at Marlins Park. The Nationals (10-3), who lead the NL East, hit four home runs in their huge inning. That's the first time Washington has hit four homers in an inning since the Nationals came into existence in 2005. It's also the first time the Marlins have allowed four homers in an inning. Athletics 3, Yankees 2 (11 innings) Mark Canha singled with two outs in the top of the 11th inning as Oakland began a 10-game road trip with a victory over New York. The winning rally started when Jed Lowrie lined a double to right field off Johnny Barbato (1-1). Lowrie took third on a groundout by Khris Davis and scored the tiebreaking run when Canha lined an 0-2 pitch off shortstop Didi Gregorius' glove into left field. Rays 3, Red Sox 0 (10 innings) Kevin Kiermaier, mired in a 1-for-25 slump, broke up a scoreless pitchers' duel with a leadoff home run in the 10th inning, keying a three-run rally and giving Tampa Bay a shuout victory over Boston. Desmond Jennings doubled home two unearned runs later in the 10th as the Rays, getting a combined one-hitter from three pitchers, won their third straight and sent the Red Sox down to their third straight defeat. Indians 3, Mariners 2 Francisco Lindor had three hits and an RBI and Carlos Carrasco pitched into the seventh inning as Cleveland beat Seattle at Progressive Field. Lindor had two singles and a double, and he drew a bases loaded walk in the Indians' two-run fourth inning. Reds 4, Rockies 3 Brandon Phillips fell a homer shy of the cycle and Robert Stephenson posted his second career victory as Cincinnati defeated Colorado at Great American Ball Park. Phillips singled, doubled and tripled in his first three at-bats before he singled again in the ninth to finish 4-for-4. Braves 8, Dodgers 1 Tyler Flowers matched his career high with four hits and drove in two runs to help Atlanta beat Los Angeles and extend its winning streak to four games. Flowers, who signed a two-year free-agent deal in the offseason, was 4-for-4 and improved his batting average to .412. He also scored a run. Mets 11, Phillies 1 Neil Walker hit two of his team's six home runs as New York battered Philadelphia. Walker, acquired from Pittsburgh in an offseason trade, hit a pair of solo shots for the Mets, who won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 7-6. Royals 8, Tigers 6 Salvador Perez drove in a career-best five runs with a home run and double and Yordano Ventura picked up his first victory of the season as Kansas City held off Detroit. Perez, who had one home run and five RBIs in his first 12 games, clubbed a three-run homer in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the third. Both hits came with two outs as the Royals jumped out to an 8-2 lead after five innings. White Sox 5, Angels 0 Todd Frazier and Jose Abreu homered and Mat Latos allowed two hits as the Chicago White Sox snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field. Latos (3-0) didn't allow a hit until surrendering a one-out single in the fifth inning and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. Rangers 7, Astros 5 The Texas Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then hung on to outslug the Houston Astros 7-5 in the season opener for the American League West rivals. Prince Fielder's two-run homer in the bottom of the first off Scott Feldman (0-2) gave the Rangers a lead they would never lose, but Houston made things interesting. Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 Jason Hammel drove in both Chicago runs with a fourth-inning single that lifted the Cubs to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. Hammel (2-0) also came through on the mound, pitching six innings to extend the Cubs' streak of getting at least that many innings out of their starter in all 14 games this season. He allowed the one St. Louis run on five hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Diamondbacks 3, Giants 0 The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their recent dominance of the San Francisco Giants in their home ballpark, getting a combined six-hit shutout from four pitchers en route to a 3-0 victory Tuesday night. Chris Owings ended Giants starter Matt Cain's no-hit bid with a first-pitch double in the fifth inning, triggering a three-run uprising that propelled the Diamondbacks to their eighth win in their last nine games at AT&T Park. Brewers 6, Twins 5 Scooter Gennett's RBI single in the ninth inning scored Yadiel Rivera, and Milwaukee took advantage of some sloppy defense for a victory against Minnesota. Rivera doubled off the wall in center field but reached third after Byron Buxton bobbled the ball twice. The left-handed hitting Gennett, who had two hits and two runs scored, followed with a opposite-field single through a drawn-in infield. Padres 5, Pirates 4 Slumping Derek Norris and Adam Rosales powered back-to-back home runs on drives of 400-plus feet Tuesday night, leading the San Diego Padres to a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The game was marked by a twice-reversed call and the first ejection of rookie Padres manager Andy Green. (Editing by Peter Rutherford)
