Ashley smacks grand slam, Johnson homers in Cheboygan softball split at Alpena

ALPENA – The Cheboygan softball team has already shown it has plenty of powerful bats in its lineup.

For one game on Tuesday, the Chiefs didn’t just hit. They blasted a couple of homers, including a grand slam by senior Jordan Ashley, who led the way with three hits in a 13-2 victory over Alpena in game one of a non-conference road doubleheader.

Joining Ashley with a homer was fellow senior Amelia Johnson, who hit a solo shot following Ashley’s at-bat. Other Chiefs recording three hits were Libby VanFleet (double, two RBIs) and Emerson Eustice (RBI, two runs). Marley Couture (double, RBI) and Emily Clark (RBI, run) tallied two hits each, and Tessa Lake (two runs) registered a hit. Ella Kosanke and Presley Chamberlain each knocked in a run and scored a run.

VanFleet was the winning pitcher, striking out five and allowing five hits in six innings.

However, the Chiefs fell just short of the sweep after losing a 5-4 nightcap.

Nataleigh Blaisdell and Kosanke each had a hit, an RBI and scored a run, Lake registered a hit and scored a run, Clark notched a hit, and Hannah Whippo scored a run.

Cheboygan (7-3) hosts Elk Rapids on Friday.

Chiefs avenge lopsided game one loss, split at Alpena

ALPENA – It’s been a rough stretch for the Cheboygan baseball team as of late.

But right when they needed it, the Chiefs came up with a huge triumph against a quality program. After suffering a 16-1 defeat in game one, the Chiefs earned a 5-3 victory and split at Alpena on Tuesday.

Fueling the Chiefs (3-5) with three hits and an RBI in game two was Blake Blaskowski, while Brennan Bradley (RBI, two runs) and Sean Postula each recorded two hits. Dylan Balazovic doubled and Warver Farver knocked in a run.

Postula earned the win on the mound, striking out eight, allowing eight hits and walking three in 5 2/3 innings. James Charboneau closed the door by striking out an Alpena batter for the final out.

"Sean Postula really pitched well," Cheboygan coach Kevin Baller said. "He really picked it up after the (first game). The kids battled back after the 16-1 loss in the first."

Bradley’s hit and RBI led Cheboygan in game one. Postula had a hit. Chase Swanson was the losing pitcher, striking out two and allowing two hits in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Cheboygan faces Elk Rapids at home on Friday.

Pellston softball earns split at Gaylord St. Mary

GAYLORD – The Pellston softball team battled back to earn a split at Gaylord St. Mary on Monday.

After a 9-7 loss in the opener, the Hornets responded with an 11-2 triumph in the nightcap. Lanie Irwin led the Hornets with three singles, Sophia Nicholls doubled and singled, and Ella Klungle and Paige Worthington tallied two hits apiece. Allie Cameron, Sadie Keck, Breanna Willis and Kendra Brado each singled. Keck was the winning pitcher.

“We turned things around on defense and worked harder on accuracy, we had smart base running which increased scoring,” Pellston coach Dena Moore said.

Cameron’s double and two singles led the Hornets in game one. Klungle doubled and singled, Willis doubled, and Keck singled. Irwin took the loss on the mound.

Pellston hosts Rudyard on Wednesday.

Cheboygan JV softball drops two at TC West

TRAVERSE CITY – The Cheboygan junior varsity softball team suffered 6-3 and 10-9 doubleheader losses at Traverse City West on Monday.

In game one, Bea Schulz led Cheboygan with two hits, while Laney Marsh had a hit and an RBI, and Aubrey Mastin added a hit. Amber Gahn was the losing pitcher, striking out six and allowing five hits in five innings.

Recording two hits apiece for Cheboygan in game two were Jenna Dodder (three RBIs), Schulz (two runs), Marsh (RBI), Martin (RBI) and Makaela Steiner (RBI). Abi Babcock chipped in with a hit. Avery Crawford took the loss on the mound, striking out two and scattering eight hits in five innings.

“The girls battled in both games and never gave up,” Cheboygan coach Danielle Mutschler said. “I cannot ask for anything better than a team who consistently gives it their all. Amber (Gahn) and Avery (Crawford) both pitched good games last night. I am proud of how aggressive the girls were at the bat.”

Graham makes hole-in-one on 17

CHEBOYGAN – Cheboygan’s Pat Graham made a hole-in-one during a round played at the Cheboygan Golf & Country Club on Sunday, April 14.

Graham’s ace came on the 17th hole. He was playing with Roger Johnson, Brent Johnson, Clayton McGovern and Cliff Lemon.
