Family legacy: Onaway’s Jadin Mix signs to play basketball at Alpena Community College

ONAWAY – It just runs in the family, apparently.

Fresh off a sensational senior campaign, the competitive basketball career isn't over for Onaway’s Jadin Mix just yet. Mix made sure of that this past weekend by signing to play at Alpena Community College next season.

With his commitment, Mix will follow in the footsteps of his brother, Jager, a former Onaway star who's played at ACC in recent seasons, and his father Marty, a member of the 1997-98 and 1998-99 Lumberjack squads.

“It honestly means so much because just knowing how wonderful that college is and what it has meant to my brother and my dad,” Mix said. “One of the biggest things is the coach, Bobby Allen. He’s always been one of the greatest people for me no matter what it’s for. The relationship I have with him is pretty cool. Of course, we wanted to make it all the way through high school and make it as far as we could, but it’s great to continue to be able to do what I love for as long as I possibly can.”

During his final season, Mix averaged 17.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 7.2 steals and 4.7 assists for the Cardinals, who won a fourth consecutive district title. Prior to the postseason, Mix became the MHSAA’s new record holder for steals in a career. In addition, he was recently recognized by the Associated Press as a Division 4 all-state honorable mention.

While he’s excited for his ACC opportunity, Mix will always cherish his time as a Cardinal. So, he made sure to praise the many who helped him reach this point.

“There’s so much between Coach (Eddy) Szymoniak and my teammates that I’ve learned from the past that helped me get here,” Mix said. “I’ve learned about what it’s like to work as a team and not everything is basketball related, and the friends that you make on the team become family and being close outside of sports. Everything we’ve learned in sports transfers into the real world and how we treat people and everything like that.”

Thrilled to see the Mix legacy live on in Alpena is Marty Mix, a proud dad who knows his son is heading into an environment where he can succeed both on and off the court.

“I know when I was there how much I enjoyed my time, and to be able to see my kids get to do that is great,” Marty said. “They just continue to amaze me with their dedication. Jager (Mix) was the same way. They both just want it so badly. We had the recruit day at Alpena (on Saturday), and to watch (Jadin) intermingle with the next group of guys he’s going to play with, that’s probably one of the biggest attributes to Eddy (Szymoniak) I can give, is finding yourself comfortable and finding yourself with your family on the basketball court, and Eddy’s always preached that with the kids.

“Looking back over my time and Jager’s time, and now it’s Jadin’s turn, and it’s the same thing over there — and that’s finding who you are and getting a good education in the process.”
