6-foot-9 Fayetteville Academy center announces college decision with NLI signing

The Fayetteville basketball scene witnessed another talented senior make his college decision on Wednesday.

Fayetteville Academy's 6-foot-9 center Derrick Green signed his National Letter Intent on Wednesday morning, and announced that he will continue his basketball playing career at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia.

Brunswick Community College competes at the Division I and II levels of the NJCAA, and are coming off of a 19-12 season under coach Walter Shaw.

"Brunswick Community is a nationally respected basketball program and Coach Shaw did a great job at making my family and I feel confident in his ability to help me develop and get me to the next level," Green said.

He began his high school career at Seventy-First, where he was an important piece to a team that reached the NCHSAA 3A State Championship during his junior year.

At Fayetteville Academy, Green averaged 12 points and eight rebounds as a senior that helped the Eagles succeed with a 27-5 overall and 12-0 NCISAA Independent Conference record despite falling in the quarterfinals to Wayne Country Day in the NCISAA 2A Playoffs.

"I want to one day play for a large Division I university," Green said. "In order to do that, I have to prove myself ata JUCO to get to that next level. The transfer portal has changed college recruiting for high school students, so scholarship opportunities have been taken."
