2024 NFL draft winners, losers: Arizona Cardinals a winner and loser for NFL Draft picks

Many NFL writers like to list winners and losers in the NFL draft each year.

Interestingly, the 2024 Arizona Cardinals show up on lists for 2024 NFL Draft winners and 2024 NFL Draft losers in the aftermath of Thursday, Friday and Saturday's draft.

That doesn't happen every year.

Many NFL writers liked what the team did with some of their early selections, especially the Marvin Harrison Jr. pick at No. 4 overall, but some of the team's other picks, like Illinois tight end Tip Reiman and Florida State running back Trey Benson, confounded them.

Here's what they are saying about the Cardinals' 2024 NFL Draft class on NFL draft winners and NFL draft losers lists.

Luke Easterling writes: "Arizona already has their franchise quarterback, but they needed just about everything else this offseason. They made a whopping 12 picks in this year's draft, and checked a lot of those boxes. It started with landing the best overall player in the entire draft (Marvin Harrison Jr.), who fills a massive need at wide receiver. It continued with tons of value picks and other positions of need that should quickly restock this roster with blue-chip talent on both sides of the ball. Don't be surprised if there's a quick turnaround in the desert thanks to this draft haul."

Teddy Ricketson writes: "The Cardinals had the fourth overall pick in the draft, and there was plenty of speculation that they would be moving back to acquire more draft capital. Instead, they addressed one of their biggest team needs and selected wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the top wideout in the class. He should be a Week 1 starter and be a top target for quarterback Kyler Murray. Arizona addressed its need for an EDGE rusher by bringing in Missouri’s Darius Robinson later in the first round. The Cards finished taking care of their biggest team needs with CB Max Melton in the second round. After that, Arizona brought in a backup running back in Trey Benson, who could take over for James Conner next year and some much-needed depth across both sides of the ball."

USA TODAY Sports: Cardinals a loser in 2024 NFL Draft

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote: "Monti Ossenfort and Co. held seven picks in the top 90, marking the highest total for any team since the Cowboys' 1991 class. Why, then, does it feel as though the Cardinals came away with so few building blocks? Florida State running back Trey Benson might be somewhat of a luxury given the presence of James Conner. Tight end is one of the few secure spots on this roster thanks to breakout target Trey McBride, but that didn't stop the Cardinals from nabbing Illinois' Tip Reiman, whose most notable football-related achievement to date is convincing people at the NFL scouting combine that he doesn't think birds are real. While Marvin Harrison Jr. should elevate the aerial attack in short order, the roster still seems like it's lagging beyond the rest of the NFL - and at a time when it could have undergone a full relaunch."

Sporting News: Kyler Murray a winner in 2024 NFL Draft

Bill Bender writes: "Neither Arizona nor New York selected a quarterback. Instead, they gave their quarterbacks help. The Cardinals selected Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 4, and the Giants took Malik Nabers with the No. 6 pick. That gives Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones go-to No. 1 receivers for the future. Murray, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, now has the most-talented receiver on the roster since Larry Fitzgerald retired after the 2020 season. Marquise Brown was the Cardinals' top receiver last season with 574 receiving yards and four TDs. Harrison, who might be the most talented player in this draft, had 17 TDs in the red zone the past two seasons at Ohio State. He will be a no-doubt WR1 from Day 1 with the Cardinals."
