AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – For the second time in three years, Scottie Scheffler is Masters champion.
Scheffler (-11) shot a final round 68 to run away from the field and win by four.
“It’s hard to put into words how special this is,” Scheffler said. “It’s been a long week, a grind of a week. The golf course was so challenging, and to be sitting here wearing this jacket again and getting to take it home is extremely special.”
Scheffler’s wife Meredith is expecting their first child in a matter of days, making Sunday’s win even more special.
“I will go home, soak in this victory tonight,” he said. “I will definitely enjoy the birth of my first child. But with that being said, I still love competing. My priorities will change here very soon. My son or daughter will now be the main priority, along with my wife, so golf will now be probably fourth in line.
But I still love competing. I don’t plan on taking my eye off the ball anytime soon, that’s for sure.”
Scheffler credited his faith for keeping him focused through the tournament.
“I wish I could soak this in a little bit more,” Scheffler said. “Maybe I will tonight when I get home. But at the end of the day, I think that’s what the human heart does. You always want more, and I think you have to fight those things and focus on what’s good.
Because, like I said, winning this golf tournament does not change my identity. My identity is secure, and I cannot — cannot emphasize that enough.”
Finishing in solo second behind Scheffler was Ludvig Aberg of Sweden (-7), playing in his first major championship. He shot a final round 69.
“There’s a lot of things that need to come together, and I felt like we did a lot of golf stuff the last couple of weeks,” said Aberg. “We’ve been working on a few things, me and my team, my coaches. And it’s nice to see that kind of come through on this stage and to know that I’m able to pull off a certain amount of shots and hit the putts the way I want to, and it’s just very encouraging and I want to do it again and again I think.”
In a group of three that finished seven behind Scheffler was two-time major champion Collin Morikawa (-4), who started the day just one off of the pace.
“I got greedy. When you’re playing really good, you don’t get greedy, and I got greedy on 9, I got greedy on 11,” Morikawa said in his post-round interview on CBS. “I wasn’t pressing, I just was trying to hit it a little bit too close, and greed can get the best of us. I’m going to take a lot from this week. It’s been a rough season so far, but hopefully this is kind of the turning point. I’ve seen a lot of good, and watching Scottie today, I know it’s doable for me, I’ve just got to put the pieces together.”
Five-time champion Tiger Woods shot 77 Sunday to finish at +16.
“It was a good week,” Woods said. “It was a good week all around. I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately yesterday it didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”
